So my right jaw has been hurting since Friday night. Not really painful about a 3 (on a scale of 1-10), just enough to notice it.

And I can't close my teeth all the way, and when I chew it hurts worse.

I've also got the sniffles and thought I might have a sinus infection. So I saw the doctor this afternoon.

He says my body is multi-tasking. I've got a cold and tmj. The cold is cured by the normal things. The tmj is cured by NOT TALKING!!! DH owes him big time!

Anyone else ever have this?

I know it's not life threatening, just annoying ... still any suggestions?

Hi MJ, Yep, this is pretty common and the doc is right on. I am a dental assistant and I know we have a hygienist here who will say the same things. Your temporal mandibular joint is sore--rest is required. Don't chew any thing like gum, tootsie rolls, chewy meats. Try to relax the jaw--little talking, don't try to laugh or smile to broadly--you know, the ear to ear grin :D , don't open to wide! Your basic OTC pain reliever should help as will moist heat applied to the joint (just in front of the ear). These should all help aleviate the pain. Good luck

This should be interesting ... I am cashiering today ... Guess I won't be as chatty and friendly as usual ... I've been good at home ... didn't think I talked as much as I wanted to last night!

It's sort of wierd, I did everything they told me, no talking, soft food, etc. Nothing worked and I was talking alot of pain meds. I didn't go back b/c I knew I wouldn't be able to see my dr just the assistant so I put it off, one day I woke up and I could close my mouth all the way and nothing hurt. It went away by itself. I have noticed that if I chew something really chewing on the side it clicks and is tender but I'm taking it easy and everything seems to be fine.

That's basically how it works! You will probably have flare ups now and then but try to avoid aggravating it as much as possible -- as you noticed the chewy foods will make it tender but as soon as you feel something not right, begin the OTC's and moist heat and you may be able to avoid the worst of the pain
