What is your favorite color to decorate with? It doesn't have to be the color that you currently decorate with, but maybe the color you'd like to decorate with.

My favorite color right now to decorate with is brown. Okay, and maybe some pink! :D

What about you? What is your favorite color to decorate with?

Hi Kate!

What an interesting topic! :)

Right now my favorite decorating colors are sage green and shades of purple, but not necessarily in the same room. ;) I'm also partial to shades of blue and certain shades of red, especially darker shades such as maroon.

Interestingly enough, all of my walls are off-white. Accessories make all the difference and accenting with colors makes it easy to change themes on a whim. :)

Ooooooh! I like sage green and purple. They do look great in the same room though! In one apartment I lived in, we could paint the walls. So one wall in my living room and one wall in my bedroom were painted purple. It was one big purple palace. ;)

And yes, accenting and accessories are easy to change out and make a huge difference!

I have a hard time staying away from pink. Half the rooms in my house contain some shade of pink(mostly kind of a "dusty rose" shade )in either the carpeting, wall color, accessories, etc. As my rooms need to be repainted and window treatments redone and furniture replaced, I am going to force myself to "go pink-less!" I already succeeded in redecorating my master bedroom in shades of taupe and off-white...with the exception of 3 cranberry colored throw pillows on the bed and a large dark pink vase on the nightstand. :p

My walls are painted 'Newport tint' throughout which is very neutral. Right now, a lot of my rooms have navy somewhere in them. I'm slowly moving away from navy and have decorated my bedroom in spicy red and gold.

I would like to buy a new purple sofa for my living room. That idea came from a gorgeous lampshade I found. I guess my tastes are changing as I get older! ;)

Carmen - I am adding some pink to my kitchen..like a kitchen rug, and some accessories. I LOVE pink. This will be the first time (except for when I was little) to decorate with pink. I love it. I also just bought some new dishes that are punch pink. ;) I'll post photos when I get moved in this weekend.

Crossfire - I recently had a purple couch that I loved. It was a royal purple color. I would have kept it had it been more comfortable. It sure was cute to look at though.

Purple is my DD's favorite color. Her bedroom is painted purple.
My favorite colors are blue and shades of gold. I have blue in most of the rooms in our home ( except my DD's bedroom :) }

I would like to decorate more with the earth tones, neutrals, rusty red, soft gold, sage green, etc.

I still have a lot of blue, but will eventually do less.

I will eventually change my den when we get new furniture, but not sure what type of furniture or color yet, but hopefully I can get some ideas here. :)

I love warm tones. We re-did the master bedroom in mossy greens, warm browns, sand color trim and palm trees.
We're getting ready to re-do the living room. I have a pile of paint chips, but so far we haven't decided. Probably something in very pale blue with a darker accent wall. We might get brave and sponge it.

I am getting ready to turn a "home office" into a music room. I do tend to stick with 3 colors: mauves, blues, forest green. I am not sure what to do with the walls in the new music room, I am still in the stage of cleaning out. I will probably be in this stage for a while, but am starting to look around at ideas. I think I would actually like to have some vibrant creative colors in there, but am thinking it will clash badly with the mauve living room it is next to.

Does anyone know what colors encourage creativity? Anything that compliments the mauve?

I have mainly blues, but am finding I am moving towards purples and lavenders. We don't own our home so all of our walls are white which gives the opportunity to change colors easier.

I have been leaning towards the creams, browns and the sage greens. In our guest bedroom, I decorated it in roses with dark maroon on one wall and a very light pale mint green on the other 3 walls .It is my favorite room as my dh won't let me put anything floral in our bedroom. :(

Every room in my house has a shade of blue in it. I'm going to do our bedroom in sage green and some earth tones. The blue comes from "that decade" where everything was blue and mauve <sigh> As money allows, I would love to go to rich earthy browns and rustic colors.

RED. I love RED. Every chance I get I add RED.

I think its because whenever I'm in a store, my eyes go to anything that is RED...and I enjoy the eye candy sensation of the hue.

Gimmee red, lots of red...and golden yellow and apple green. :D

I had some friends turn one of their spare bedrooms into a recording studio. They put acoustic tiles on the walls, so it was all black. That may not be the look you are going for, but sounded really good! haha

When we started our remodel we ended up using lots of sage green. In some rooms we used it with red and in other rooms (like my office) I used a raspberry color with some teal and gold mixed in for good measure.

The craziest room we have so far is the guest room off of the game room... it is Columbian blue and red to go with all of our Houston Oilers memorabilia.

We still have lots of other rooms to go... and those color schemes are still "under negotiation". It is an adventure in Home Depot!

Kate,

Black probably would not be the missing color here. But, it does sound like a good idea for a spare bedroom. I don't have any spare bedrooms yet.

I have heard that bright yellow is a creative color, but not wanting to go that way either.

I have a friend who just repainted the whole inside of her house in primary colors. For her it works, for me it is a little too loud.

I am thinking about some shade of green for the music room. Maybe mint green on one wall. Maybe "create" some wallpaper on another wall with some old sheet music. One wall will be covered in bookshelves (room has to double as a library). That leaves just one more wall........hmmm, maybe some giant musical notes handpainted on the wall?

My home is dcorated with mostly golds, tuscan orange, browns, greens, and nuetrals.
I do have one room that is very different from the rest of my house...my office. It is one of my favorite rooms. It is painted a light milk chocolate color and has red and black accents and furniture. I went through very old pictures from generations past and made larger black and white copies and put them in black frames around the room. It turned out really nice! :)

My whole downstairs and my DD's old bedroom are blue, shades of blue and more blue. LOL! My son's old room is green, my bathroom is mostly white and gray, my office is green and yellow and my bedroom is shades of purple and green.

Hi Girls,

I have navy & terra cotta with florals in my bedroom. I also have navy in the living room but have lots of color accents( burgundy, gold green, even a little pink). It is a large eclectic room and it all works together somehow.

The dining room has one wall which is hunter green. The rest of the walls are country white.I also painted the kickboards on the stairs hunter green.

I really like mauves and taupes for my house. I am going to try and be bold and paint my computer room a red type color. This will be a huge change for me. When I first moved in my house I wanted every wall to white. Now I am ready for a change.

I am actually considering painting my living room silver. Has anyone used this color before?

Because I live with bushland behind and sea in the front, I think these colours work with the surroundings.

I am currently planning on a redo for my bedroom in blue, khaki, and brown-something very new to me. My bedroom has always been pale blue and yellow with white accents-but out with the old! Just found the new curtains-quilted blue silk-lookalike SHOWER CURTAINS ! Couldn't afford the $400-800 for real silk. Dh and I are planning on making an upholstered headboard-maybe with ultrasuede.

I am an earth tones kind of girl, who currently is stuck with blue living room furniture. We rent right now so all the walls are white. I am looking forward to buying another house (we have a three year plan) and I want to do an accent wall in either a forest green or a deep red. I have never braved deep colors on the wall before, but everytime I see it in a magazine I do the WOW thing. What's the worst that can happen? A can of primer and another of paint and it is gone if I hate it, right?

This definately got my attention, I love color and painting! What a great post. I am definately a golden yellow girl, deep warm colors. I also like many shade of greens and blues that have a warmer tone to them if you know what I mean by that. The tones are what I really seem to focus on alot. I am amazed that there are more who prefer the cooler shades here then the warmer shades. Thats interesting. In our old home I had a specific custom shade of yellow made up at the paint store to get just the right color. Then when we moved to our new home a few years ago it was painted a really great khaki color. I loved it up until about a year and then just had to go back to my deep custom yellow to boost my spirits, I think it had too much of a cool tone for me. Crazy huh! Well, the best thing is that I love red too, but have always been to scared to try it for myself since it takes so many coats. Our new house was painted a fantastic tomatoe red in the dining room above chair rail and I love it. It also goes well with the deep golden yellow I put on the bottom of the chair rail. Sorry so chatty this was my first post, I guess you can see how much I loved this topic !

I find that I have a lot of red... of course, it is my favorite color. I have red living room furniture, and I have been toying with purple walls... not too over the top like grape, but something with a warm purple tint. I just think it would looks so nice with the red furniture. My other half may not let me do it! I also think a pewter gray would go well. I also have red with hints of gold and brown in my bedroom, but I'm thinking of changing that - not sure to what though!

Jaycie,

I love your bold color choices. I always wish I were brave enough to do that. I like earth tones, but sometimes I think I like them in part because they are safe. We are going to be buying a new house in the next couple of years. I think I will make it a goal to go bold in one room and see what I think!

Thanks Sherry.... believe me, it's a new thing for me to have the bold colors! I still struggle with it to some degree. But, I just loooove red, and when I saw the furniture I had to have it -- I don't regret it either! I'm in the process of buying a house now, and I have big plans! I'm really wanting to paint the kitchen a salmon color with white trim and white cabinets -- I saw it in a home during my search and it was just stunning!

Keep me posted on how you like the kitchen. When I was a kid, my mom had a very bright yellow kitchen with blue accents and I loved it. Not as bold as salmon, but bold for me. Maybe you can take pictures and post them?

Good luck and thanks for the inspiration!

Have to admit, I'm more a neutral colour person (sort of). I like warm but light. Buttermilk, Magnolia, Biscuit, Cream. Those are the colours I choose to decorate with. I also find that if a room is small, lighter colours seem to open the room up. Where as dark colours make it look smaller.

We have owned 3 homes and I never really got to put my "touch" on one until this one, so all the desire for PURPLE came pouring out! Actually, only my bedroom is painted a very pale lavendar, but my bathroom is painted in a deep, grape purple with a painted periwinkle border. I am into painting borders right now (wide ones) rather than using wallpaper.
Other than that, I use purple stencils or touches in the family room/kitchen.
But I love lots of colors - my DD's bedrooms are pink and the other blue, my spare bedroom is seagreen and blue. One bathroom is all done in bright blue and yellow (a ducky theme) and a half bath is bright peach with different colored stencils of daisies in shades from white to fushcia!
So, I guess you could say I like color!!!!!
My next project is dining room - it connects to living room, which is predominantly sage green and navy - any suggestions? DH says branch out and get away from the purple!!!! :D

Hi everyone. I am redecorating right now so this is top on my mind. I love yellows, oranges, rich browns and then tone it down with soft taupy color. To me the colors are rich with happiness, fun and youth. The purple and sage that was mentioned earlier is what my daughter wants for her bedroom and again i think it is a fabulous mix! I suffer from depression, especially seasonal depression and I discovered a few years ago that colours can really help elevate my mood. Bright bold colours seem to really stimulate me and help me from needing anti-depressants.

My current colour scheme - kitchen/dining/main entry are in a bold spicy red and my livingroom (which is open to the kitche) is in a gorgeous bright mediterranean blue. My furniture is all in shades of brown so that it's easy to change colour schemes in future. I have a few items of red in the blue room and a few items of blue in the red rooms. An area rug in the livingroom has the blue, red and shades of brown and taupe that tie it all together. I love my bright bold colours. Never will I be beige again!

I absolutely love red and have it accented in every room. I also love the warm earth tones - golds, browns, and light shades of gray-green. We are in the midst of remodeling. We used to have every different color in every room - bubblegum pink, sage green, gray-blue, but now we're going with the more neutrals and accenting in the bolder colors.

Great topic! Color is such an expensive way to make a dramatic change to a room.

Have fun!

Shades of green (on the lighter side) and teal (blue/green). In other words -- water colors. I had my living, dining, and bedroom painted nine years ago. They were eath tones when I moved in. Nice, but.... I had my bedroom painted in Ace paint color green fog with white trim. When I first saw my bedroom after painting -- 'bout took my breath away. I loved it then and I still do. It's me!! :)

My bathroom is very small, but I love the colors. White tile, towel racks, tub, sink, WC. Grayish marble pattern formica counter. Wallpaper is bamboo pattern in very soft aqua and blue. It's me! :)

Kitchen is hodge podge. Needs help big time. But I love the wallpaper. When I finally get to fixing up the kitchen, will have to work around the wallpaper.

A few months ago I painted my bedroom chocolate brown and use terra cotta with it and some greens. Sometimes I change out the terra cotta for reds in there which are gorgeous with the brown. It's amazing how many colors go with it. I am going to put aqua with it for spring and summer. It is so soothing in the bedroom and very classy looking. I also just painted above my cabinets in the kitchen a deep red. It is beautiful and just so cheerful when entering the room.

Our house is very colorful. We actually have 23 different colors of paint in the house!

I really like bright colors. The living room is yellow, my music room is a vibrant blue... and the kitchen is the color of a terra cotta flower pot, just to name a few of the colors.

There's no pink in the house, although my office is sort of a salmon color.

My biggest decorating hurdle is I don't like nail holes in the wall. (Must have come from living in apartments where nail holes were frowned upon...) I still have pictures that should be hung up but instead are leaned up against the walls -- and we moved into our house almost 2 years ago.

I just did our guest room in a natural tan and a blue called stillness, with accents of chocolate brown. It turned our really nice and bright, but still sophisticated looking. My favorite color is a sort of paprika red, and I never could quite bring myself to do a whole wall that color, but I did get a sofa and some throw pillows that color, and then used it in a bathroom in a little cubby that encloses the sink in a khaki and tan room with black and cream accents. Sounds like a lot of colors, but since most of them are neutral it isn't overwhelming.

I'm trying to do my house in Americana and so red and warm brownish-white colors are what I'm doing right now. However in my bedroom, it is a beach theme. My mother had bought me a beautiful comforter for christmas and I loved the colors in it. It has lighthouses on it. I took one of the shams with me to Home Depot and they matched the colors for me. It was perfect!!! I have a dark blue half way up the wall, and the other half is a really pretty sea green. You should see how well the colors match. It's great
