Hello,
I'm not sure how appropriate this is, but I figured I'd give it a try...
I'm having some problems with my computer (or my browser; not sure which), which suddenly will not load websites that I have been frequenting, some for years (literally). I've cleaned the machine up real nice and defragged it, and it is still doing it. Is anyone out there computer savvy enough to give me some help with this? I would sure appreciate it!
Thanks! :D

If I were to guess (since I'm on a pretend geek) I would say it sounds like corrupt cookies in your cache OR you are running Norton firewall virus protection (or some other computer protector that has settings that aren't quite right). Sounds ominous, doesn't?
If its the cache:
Get away from any of those sites that are causing you odd page loading problems. Like go to cnn.com or amazon.com. Go to your browser prefs and find the EMPTY CACHE button/link. Click that. If you can find an "ADVANCED PREFS" link, look in there and see if you can find: DUMP (or empty) COOKIES.
Reboot your computer...and then return to those sites and see if that helped.
Check your firewall/virus protector or site protector. Some of those sites might have words that cause the site to be blocked as porn. (Like hystersisters.com comes up blocked for many of these because of the nature of some of the words used there) One way to fix this is to find in the norton/protector PREFS. WHITELIST (acceptable site list) where you can add the name of the site to the list for viewing. Otherwise, set your "security level" down a notch and see if that helps.
If not...then I'd suggest calling your ISP to find if they have you behind a firewall.

Thanks so much to both of you for your advice. I ended up getting some online help, and cleaned out some things I never would have thought of, but when I went to bed last night...the computer was still not acting as it should. This morning when I fired her up, everything was fine and I could (and still can) access all the websites I wanted to!!! I thought it was a miracle (not really, but close)! Turns out my teenage son got frustrated last night and unplugged the modem for about 10 minutes. When he plugged it back in, he realized all was well again...so I guess it took a modem reset to do the job. Sometimes the simplest things are what do the trick.
I will bookmark the site you posted, Ms Big Butt, for future reference!!
Have a great weekend!! :thankyou:

My first thought was to purge the cache also , like Kathy said- that[ usually fixes those problems up.
