Okay, I'll admit it. I love watching American Idol. The beginning of the season is a hoot with the lines of folks who believe they can really sing.

What are these people thinking?

My favorite part is at the end of the show, when they put together one song that has been sung by TONS of people. It cracks me up.

I vowed not to watch the show this season, but have to admit I broke that promise. :( Bad me.

What I don't like about it is that so many people who obviously have no talent are allowed an audition in front of Simon, Paula and Randy, but people who are truly talanted don't get that far. I understand why it's done that way but I feel badly for those who don't get the opportunity.

Interestingly enough, I know two young people from my little town who went to the auditions--one for last season and one for this season. Both are very talented singers and neither got to make that all-important audition. And no, they weren't my children! lol The nice thing is they are good kids and weren't jaded by the experience. Gotta love that! If it's meant to be, it will happen for them one way or another. :)

I tried watching American Idol when the program debuted several years ago, and I couldn't stand it! I thought the some of the contestants were embarrassingly pathetic and that Simon was so mean.

Because I was waiting around for "Boston Legal" to start on Tuesday night and had some time to kill, I tuned in to AI just to remind myself how much I hate it...and, guess what? I kind of liked it! Has it changed somewhat over the years? Or, have I? :confused:

I think they have done a better job of mixing up the good & the bad for the audition shows this year, so it's not so hard on the ears... :)

Yeah, I think they have done a better job at mixing up the bad and the good. The past 2 years I've watched it from start to finish. I honestly don't like how they allow these bad singers to audition when you know they are passing up on some really good ones. I know that it's to have a huge buildup before the show really begins, but still. I get a kick out of the bad ones.

I've watched bits and pieces of it over the years. Last season, my DD and I watched it from start to finish. Fell in love with Carrie Underwood's voice from the day she auditioned. Once the voting started, we were those poor pathetic soles who hit redial for 2 hours on both our phones. We did this each week. And we were so happy that Carrie won.
Now I'm watching this season get started. I haven't found anyone yet I'm that passionate about (Thank Goodness for that). I enjoy watching, but the calling in each week for the entire time got old. (But we worried that since we had been voting so much, what if we didn't, she might make the cut that week).
It's a lot of fun. I can't believe how many people really think they can sing, when they can't at all. AMAZING Haven't they ever recorded themselves and listened.

I have to admit I have been addicted since season two. I even TIVO it so I don't miss anything. Our dogs aren't too crazy about some of the caterwalling during the auditions... this makes them high tale it across the room and seek protection from behind their Daddy. I LOVE AMERICAN IDOL!!! My DH (who usually works o/t everyday) rushes home on Tuesdays and Wednesdays so that we can hoot and holler at the TV. The kids have to be settled in upstairs so that we can have this time. Popcorn gets made, ice tea poured......I know, small things amuse small minds!!! :p :D

I love it too, I watch our UK versions too. I think we get it it slightly delayed over here, but loving it all the same. The early shows are hilarious to watch, a great way to warm up for the people with talent.

Carrie was great last year. I had no doubts (although I thought Constantine was pretty cute.)

Oh I know. They should have cut both of them. I think it's Terrell and Derrell! They are male divas, if you ask me. :) I like the one girl who's dad is in jail and has been living with her grandma. I'd like to see her do well.

I like Chris Daughtery (sp) the cowboy with shaved head who married the gal wih 2 kids and she's sooooo supporting his big chance. His voice is kinda raspy. I am not sure if he made it thru last nite, as I only saw him in the audience.

I am anxious to get all the extras out of the way so we can get acquainted with our top 24. AND I hope that top 24 doesn't include the pompous twins from last nite... they haven't earned the right to behave in that fashion... bleah.

She didn't have a great performance the other night, but she is so sweet and the accent is so cute! As Simon said, she has a likeability factor. I didn't like many of the guys. And the Cocoa Cabbana (err...Copa Cabana - it's my mom's fault) guy has got to go. My gosh. He reminded me of some guy from Disney World or Six Flags performing.

Kate... I agree with you about the ones that you like, and I would add Lisa Tucker to the list. I thought the girls out sang the guys this week with Katharine McPhee being the one we re-winded the most and listened to over and over again. She made it look effortless.

We have DVR and recorded the guys singing, thank god, they are not as good as the ladies.
We fast forwarded thru some, it was just too painful to listen to:D . Although toward the end some were amazing. I discovered if I didn't watch their preformance and just listened to them sing I could here the pitch problems etc. Can't carry a tune myself, LOL.

Emily, as you well know...in a competition like this, "anything can happen" in the weeks to come! Full blooms can wither and die with the increasing heat, and tiny blossoms can emerge. I look at the women you mentioned and ask myself, "If I were to pay money to attend a concert performed by them, would I feel I got my money's worth?" After all, that's what separates "professionals" from "amateurs." Those that get paid for what they do, versus those who do it for fun or for a nominal fee...wedding singers and county fair talent show winners, versus big name Vegas headliners and recording artists. I haven't seen many of the latter among the female contestants.

I was a little disappointed last night in the girls. I'm starting to agree with the judges. I'm tired of all these "sappy" songs. The two young girls are excellent, but stop with the "old" songs! We need to see some perky personality out there. Something that gets you on your feet and makes you want to dance!

I thought Lisa was fantastic! I actually thought she was the best last night. A true star.
I liked, Katherine, Melissa, Mandisa, Ayla, Paris, and Kelly. I like Kelly a lot, I just don't know if her voice is going to be enough. You can't help but like her though.

Last night I was pleasantly surprised with Aylla, I thought she did great. I think she is one that may blossom, if she moves on. I think Mandisa has a great voice. I like Kelly, she is soooo cute, but don't think she has lived up to expectations, as far as her singing goes, from her audition.

Taylor Hicks is too scary-looking. A makeover might help.

Elliott Yamin is way too unattractive, beyond makeover help.

Ace Young has the "wow factor" in terms of looks, but I think he needs a tad more vocal talent to win. If only he could sing as well as last year's runner-up who looks like a Smurf.

Gedeon McKinney has a powerful voice and his uniqueness might get him his share of votes.

Kevin Covais has a nasal quality to his voice that I find irritating.

Jose "Sway" Penala lacks the "wow factor."

Will Makar is just plain boring.

Bucky Covington (whose hair looks like mine on a bad day) has beautiful eyes and a good voice for country rock, but it's probably not quite enough to win the competition.

David Radford, the Donny Osmond lookalike, is as cute as a button, but he lacks showmanship and a connection with the audience.

Chris Daughtry has "got it all." :thumbsup:

I think the audience plays a BIG part, but in the end I think people are honest. Carrie U. is doing very well these days. I think it came down to the best two last year.

Kelly is going to have to pick it up vocally to win, but I've seen it happen. After all , she hasn't had ANY training and she will be getting it now. Tues. I saw her coming out of her shell a little more. She is definately a cutie !

I am not sure how much the voting audience is influenced by the judges comments but I know from past years there are some cult followings no matter how good or bad the person sings. I must admit that many times I DO agree with Simon! That being said, I cannot wait until later on to see who is voted off. I am so glad Brenna is gone. How on earth did she get into the finals anyway. She's not even good vocally. She needs to go in to acting or comedy. Not anywhere near singing.

I felt bad for Heather, David, and Sway though. Each week is going to be sad from now on.

I'm looking forward to this week's shows. Anyone know what the theme will be (if any) for the songs chosen?

I think there is still one more week of eliminations, before starting with the final group. Then the theme weeks will start. I could be wrong, but I think there has to be a final 12. 6 girls and 6 boys.

Ohh! I'm glad to know that. We are left with 8 and 8 at the moment I think...so by the end of this week we end up with 6/6.

If only the Copacabana guy could sing on tune, I think he could actually become a professional. Probably never win AI, but at least have a singing career on some level. There was just something appealing about his personality and he had a good stage presence, in my opinion. :)

Paris Bennett - too out of tune

Lisa Tucker - had some pitch problems, but she is appealing

Melissa McGhee - has a good “arena rock” voice

Kinnik Sky - very out of tune; a shame :(

Katharine McPhee - pretty gal, perfect performance…but she doesn’t grab me :confused:

Ayla Brown - mediocre

Mandisa - I found her to be “loud” more than anything; the judges liked her but I didn’t particularly :shrug:

Kellie Pickler - absolutely sensational! :thumbsup:

I thought Mandisa was really really good. She has a great voice and knows how to handle it. Katherine was good also. I liked Kellie but she needs more strength in her voice. I'll think she'll go far. I think Mandisa and Kelly will be there til the end.

Catherine - Great voice,but needs to throw in some more personality.

They have to get down to the final 6 women. I think she will be a good choice to have as one of them, since two have to go this week. She'll keep the group entertained and I think she'll do good on the commercials and on tour as a group. I don't think she's going to go far by any means. I know her "innocense" can only get her so far. As I said, she doesn't have the vocals to compete with the top girls or guys. It will surprise me if she stays in much longer. But, I will give her the top 12!

Oh, I kind of agree about the country music. They have their own show. You're probably right, but this is AI. It does not have a specific type of music. Look what we've had so far. R &B, Christian, Mellow/classic, country......a mix. Personally, I like Rock and R &B. Kelly C. is my favorite all time AI winner! I love her music.

I agree she should be in the top 12(Melissa and Kinnick leaving tomorrow) but I guess I just am not fond of country music. LOL! But when all is said and done for me personally.........I think it is a guy's turn to win! Except for Mandisa, the girls bore me to tears but the guys......oooooooo la la! LOL!

Just as pop and rock are American, so is country. I know that a lot of people don't like it, but enough voted to make Carrie last year's AI winner and she's country. :)

I really like Kellie as a person. She has an o-k voice. But she is sweet as pumpkin pie! Mandisa has the pipes and Kathryn is pretty and can sing. The rest of the girls I think are too young: Paris and Lisa. They sing great, but they are lacking in song choices and the 'it' factor. I don't know, but I think they are overrated if you ask me. Maybe they will shine more when they make it into the top 10. Kinnick will leave this week. And I like Melissa's voice, but she doesn't shine. Ayla will make it into the top 12, but will probably be one of the first to go.

I'm honestly not really fond of as many people as I have been in the previous years. The only one that I think has what it takes is Chris.

I agree with all you have said Kate. From what I've been reading on some Reality forums most are feeling the same way. So far, there really hasn't been alot of WOW!

I hope the guys put on a better show than the gals did. I would like to see more than one or two WOW performances.

I think Chris has been the best, but I can't help but wonder how is he going to do on the theme weeks. Can anyone see him singing DISCO? :eek:

Tonight, I nailed down the reason I enjoy Bucky (my "hair twin") so much: His voice reminds me of Bob Seeger, who I love.

Taylor & I are from the same state, so I send out *snaps* to him. I love that he looks like hes having a fit to the music, makes him unique!

Kevin never really has 'done it for me'. I think he would be great as a voice over for a cartoon movie or something....a musical...stage or something.

Theres not a single guy that I just hate. But the ladies need to step it up & find their zone. The guys will end up taking it all, if not careful!

I thought Taylor was great! Chris was good also. I don't get what all the gushing over Ace is about. I thought that song was terrible! I can't get into Bucky, I didn't like his singing very much. If he makes it thru, how is he going to do singing something other than Country???

Speaking of Kevin, on a Reality forum someone posted a picture of chicken little and the resemblance is amazing. I do think he can sing, but he is just out of his element. Maybe in a few years.....

Aylla, Kinnick, Will and Gideon are gone. I was a bit shocked that Gideon was gone as I thought he really had some good performances. I didn't like him at first, but thought he did so well in the elimation weeks. Guess he didn't have the fan base that some of the others did.

That is one of the things that upsets me about this show. Sometimes it's not really about talent..... I get so mad, but yet I keep watching. Yeah, they have hooked us in.

I do think the judges had some doing in who went home tonight. They had their faves picked out so ooohhed and ahhhhed even when they didn't do so well.

I still don't get the Kevin thing though? Why do the judges keep ooohing and aaahhhing over him? I don't get it....

I feel like they had the right people in the bottom numbers, and I'm sure the ones that were standing with them ,and stayed, will be going home soon, but I have to agree that people are voting for who they like and not voting on who is most talented. Kevin is still there . ;)

BUT.........If you listen to the judges, American Idol is about what the people like! They want a talented person with an appealing personality. Did you hear Simon, when he said he likes Kellie P. over last years winner! Carrie is a fantastic singer, much better vocally than Kellie, AND, they both sang country, so what's up with that?!

I'm hoping that the final 12 will improve and be very entertaining. I LOVE Stevie Wonder. This should be good. I think Gedeon would have been a shining star singing his songs and I'm not so sure Bucky will be.
