I love walking in someones home and it smells so good. I have been a candle addict for the last couple of years and seem to always be burning one in the main two rooms in my home. I've gotten spoiled and went from the cheap--o candles, to some very expensive ones. I've also just started with the scented oil fans for like a bathroom you wouldn't want a candle burning unattended.

Our 6 year old grandaughter is living with us now, so I really have to watch the candles.

Anyone have any suggestions? Best brand of candle for the money? Any other ideas for keeping the house smelling good and "homey".

Can't wait for summer! Love to open those windows! :)

I love Yankee Candles. I really think that they are well worth the cost. The cheapo candles you buy don't last very long, so you're not really saving money. The scents are more fragant also. I really have noticed a difference.

I use the oil scented plugins. We have cats so odor can be a problem. ;) I found that the lavendar scented oil is the best one so far. Some of the others I don't notice so much, but the lavendar one I can really smell.

I also love to burn pot pourri. I have an electric pot, but have heard that you can put some on the stove, just put in some water and put it on a low simmer.

I like using a candle warmer instead of lighting the candle. It eliminates the black shadowing on the walls caused by a burning candle. I purchase mine at Walmart for under five dollars, but have seen them other places, too.

I love the Salt City Candles. They are pricey though so I only get them every so often. I also use a candle warmer. I think you get more scent from them that way.

Another scent I really like are the Wall Flowers from Bath and Body works. My favorite scent is the spice and the pumpkin cinnamon.

Wow- what a neat place- Once again, Kathy ROCKS!!!!
Now back to the candles.
Salt City candles are very highly scented, and come in a huge array of fragrances. But I think My favorites are Gold Canyon. They are wonderful.... I dont use a warmer because I dont think you get the full aroma with a warmer, but the Gold canyon have 2 wicks and they burn beautifully. I dont know if they are avaliable where you are but they do have a web-site...
Much love

I love the Gold Canyon Candles. Someone at work gave me one for Xmas, and I 've been hooked since. I think they are better than Yankee, mostly because of the double wick and "home cookin" scents. I love that line.

I have bought some off of Ebay. Even with shipping costs, they are still cheaper than the Gold Canyon brochure.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check out the Salt City Candles AND the lavender scent for the plug ins.

Thanks gals!

I am a candle addict too:) I even have the candles lit in the summer. They add to the sweet smell of summer. Most of the time I light the candles in the evening. Besides the nice scent in the air it is very relaxing!

I like the scented oils from The Body Shop. They have this orange fragrance that fills your place. They burn it alot in the mall and I can smell that store from a ways away. They also have a fragrance that I really love called Midnight (something). Anyway, it's a nice soft scent.

I also like Pier 1's candles. I have one that I am burning right now that smells like a man. ;) Mmmmmmmmmm

I use the scented oil warmers, and have one in every room. My favorite is vanilla, and I love it when I replace the whole house full of the smell :) I will watch for the sale on refills and then use my coupons to get the double savings.

I also use the french vanilla spray in a pinch.

Home Interiors has awesome extremely fragrant candles. The one on my dining room table has never been used yet smells like it is burning. I also use a coffee mug warmer for jar candles and you can leave them on all the time and really makes the smells nice.

I like burning candles... anything in vanilla! I LOVE vanilla scented candles... they make it smell like I have been busy in the kitchen. I once got my MIL a basil candle ( I think from the Body Shop) and it made her house smell like she was making lasagna... kind of strange, and a dissapointment if you had a taste for italian food for dinner.

My current favorites is a Yankee Candle line called The YC Collection (from Linens 'n Things) in Vanilla and Sandlewood scent. I have several of those all over my house--I LOVE it!!!

I also have a regular Yankee jar candle in Chocolate Chip Cookie scent and it actually makes my house smell like I have been baking cookies!! It has fooled people!!

I am adicted to candles. My mother-in-law and I were shopping one day and she was telling me about the candle warmer. I laughed at her and told her she was funny. She got me one for Christmas and I absolutely think it's the greatest thing. I am going to get one for the office too.!

I love Yankee Candles. "Clean Cotton" is one of my favorite scents. It's a crisp, clean scent.

I also like the wall plug-in's from Bath & Body Works.

I love White Barn Candle company! Although I like many of the scents, my favorite is Blissful Blackberry. They also have a collection that smells like different foods. I bought the mint chocolate chip...it smells just like the ice cream. I let my mom borrow it to put in her kitchen and one day I went over there and it was gone...she told me that she wanted ice cream everytime she went in the kitchen so she threw the candle in the trash! :( So I dont recommend that one if you are trying to cut out the sweets!

I love Yankee candles and always have a variety of tarts and votives on hand. My kids are fooled by the Christmas Cookie scent- yummy.

I've never used a candle warmer before, but seeing all you guys mention them sure makes me want to run out tomorrow and get one! :)

I like Partylite candles... but then again I am a consultant for Partylite! The wax is fantastic and lasts so long. They also have scent plus ones for those who really like a strong scent. Spiced Vanilla and Mulberry are my favs I think.

Bath and Body Works "Wallflowers" in "Sweet Pea" scent. And Tyler Candle Company (a local gift shop sells them) in English Ivy. Two candles burning have the whole house smelling fabulous.

Hello!
I love scents in the home too. I use a candle warmer because of the black mark as well.
I also put a little oil in my vacuum cleaner bag and each time I vacuum it freshens the room. I also use a little oil on my lightbulbs. Each time I turn on the light it warms the oil and scents the room.
Yankee Candle has always been my favorite. I'm definitely going to look into the others too.

I love candles too. I use tart burners they work a lot longer for me and sometimes I get tired of a scent and a tart is alot cheaper than a candle I stick with Yankee. If you have little kids you may want to try the Bath and Body Works Wallflowers. They work great, my favorite scent is Warm Vanilla Sugar.

I have some of the scented oil lamps in my home. They are beautiful to look at and they can really make the house smell wonderful. Also, even though you light them, the flame is put out after the first minute, so the fire danger is not as great.

LOL I agree with Fldtrlady! Food scented candles make me too hungry!
I bought "Mistletoe" scented Yankee Candle before Christmas and am still enjoying it. It has a nice outdoorsy smell and makes me feel good, (not hungry!), when I smell it!

I am a fan of the tart warmers/burners from Yankee. I like the Macintosh scent or anything clean. Sometimes I am in the mood for more cinamonny scent...Hmm.... I have seen the candle warmers but never gotten one yet... does it really work well?

I found a good one this past Christmas!! I found it on the internet, and thought I'd give it a try;I liked it so well that I ordered one for each of my 5 daughters for Christmas. It's called a Redolere lamp, and it uses lamp oil. They sell lots of different scents for it, and it is supposed to be safer than burning a candle.
Hope this helps!!

I love candles as well - I have a very fragrant one by my front door so when I come home I immediately feel relaxed and so happy. I also like lavendar scented linen spray for my sheets and blankets - it is wonderful to open my bedroom door and crawl into a bed that is so very nice. Helps with getting to sleep too!

I to use a candle warmer to keep our home smelling great,we think that it enhances the candle scent and prolongs the life of the candle as well!

I love candles, too. Especially soy candles!

After I had my daughter I became concerned about the air quality in my home. I had always loved Yankee candles and candles from Pier One, but I noticed that they tended to leave soot on the containers. I figured that if I could SEE that soot, that I was also breathing that soot - and I definitely didn't want my baby breathing it either.

Soy candles are almost soot-free, which is a big advantage, I think. The wax also cleans up with soap and water if you spill it. The wax also burns at a lower temperature. Can you tell that I am enthusiastic about soy candles? I actually started making them on my own. If you want to see them, my web site is here (http://www.candelasoy.com) .

Candle warmers are another way to get around the whole soot problem. I picked one up for $3.99 at Hobby Lobby the other day and I am enjoying it! In fact, I have it going right now and my kitchen smells like oranges and cloves. It's about 8 degrees here right now, so I am really appreciating the warmth and coziness of my candles.

Love scents any way I can get them. Candles and nag champa incense are 2 of my favorite ways.
I am a self avowed candle freak - I have so many candles lit my husband is sure I will burn the house down. Plus at night with the lights out I love the soft glow. Very relaxing!

I walked into a Curtain shop & I could smell this lovely Orange Scent. I asked the Assistant & she showed me. It was these wooden Balls (about the size of large marbles) with concentrated oils dropped on them. I just had to get them. Admittedley, they are expensive, but well worth the money. The Balls are about £2.00 each. You just put them in a decorative bowl & put a few drops of Orange Grove oil on them & it last for weeks at a time. Of course their are other scents you can use, but I love the Orange one.

Gold Canyon candles for sure. Just had a party last night. My best friend sells them. The GC candles just permeate the house. You can walk in one door and smell the candle burning on the other side of the house. Just love them.

MariAnne,

That sounds what I'm looking for. I love candles but my husband doesn't like them because he says the smoke from them make soot on the walls, which is true. I know there are the sootless candles but I'd rather just use something else. I usually use those plug ins but they don't last too long.

Where do you get the little balls and how many do you use?

Thanks

Yankee Candles...and homemade ones (you can add extra scent when you make them yourself). My sister-in-law makes awesome candles (better than mine, even!)

I like to use candle toppers...the supposedly increase the burn time of the candles. I don't know about that but they do help stop the residue.

I use the candle warmers so I don't have to worry about the burning wick. Also if I forget its still ok. They also have beautiful lights that have candles melts in the top. I have one in each bathroom and the kitchen to match the decor. (Can you tell I am a candle addict too? :p ) Would still have to worry about the hot wax with GD but can put up higher.

I buy my candles from some local dealers and they are wonderful and pour them themselves and they are very good. They refill my candles and I can have them make a special smell. They carry several I have had them make like vanilla lilac. I used to use Gold Canyon and they are very good. Gotta have lots of oils to be aromatic enough. If they are really waxy the smell will not stay!

the plug ins are awesome.. i love the clean linen scent!

salt city candles...Welcome Home is my favorite scent. it is AKA christmas eve, too.

yankee and gold canyon's macintosh apple candles are great, too.

i use febreze if i feel like there is some weird odor or if my cat was just in the litter box and i can smell her. their evergreen fragrance is pleasing.

isn't it funny that we are all obsessed with having a great-smelling house??? :)

Hi NeNe, sorry have'nt had much time to get on here over the last few days.
Re: Scented Wooden Balls....Well i'm not quite sure where you would get them where you live. I suposse you could try places that sell Scented Oils. It wasn't something I had seen before either. But where I live, you can buy them at the Markets & anywhere that sells the oils. I much prefer these to candles, as my youngest is a bit of a mischief. I don't trust them around him. They balls also last forever. The Oils are expensive but you just a add a few drops to them & as I said before, the smell last for a few weeks before you have to add more. Here, they cost about £2.00 per ball. I have no idea how to convert this for you.
Sorry I couldn't help you more. Hope you find them though. Happy hunting.

Thanks Marianne,

I'll try to find them next time I do some serious shopping. There aren't too many good shops in my small town and probably will have to go to the next bigger town over. I went to Wal Mart and found a candle warmer and a candle called Linen. Smells so good. I'll see how I like it. Thanks for the info.

This is a fun topic for me!!! I love candles, but don't like what most companies make them with. I don't like parafin because of the health hazards I've learned about over the years. That aside, I really enjoy making my own candles, and so do all my friends and family. I make them with 100% soy wax or 100% botanical/soy wax. I really rather use essential oils for a totally 100% natural candle but everyone loves all the fragrances that are available so I make both for my family and friends and of course myself. Making candles is not only totally relaxing for me to do, but the out come is a wonderful smelling home. I use the ceramic candle warmer and burn my candles, both throw the scents wonderfully, but the warmer is much safer for me since I have 4 kidos 4 years old and younger. Any way, I love both the fragranced soy candles and the essential oil soy candles!

I also love to burn candles. I'm constantly trying to overpower the "barn scent". I love the candles from Hobby Lobby ("DD"). They have them 50% off quite often and I think they smell just as good as Yankee. In fact, I like a lot of the scents better.

I love candles also, I burn them everynight, I have 2 large canldewarmers but found that putting candles in them depleted the scent fast and ended up smelling like cooked wax. What I do now is use an empy candle jar and put about 3 Yankee tarts in and use them that way. I used to use the plug in type room fresheners but my husband read that there were 2 house fires lately that were caused by them so he threw them all out. I also use candle toppers and that seems to keep down the soot and helps the candles burn better

I'm also a fan of the Clean Linen and Clean Cotton candles. Even Glade Clean Linen can battle bacon odors. They just burn quickly. I used to have these metal rings that would go on top of a lamp's bulb and you'd put scented oil in it. Now I'm wondering what I did with those!

Yeah, I used to have those too. Hmm, have to search those out again. I still like my candle lamps, when I get tired of the scent, I just heat it up, pour it out and put a new one in. All depends on the mood or what DH has cooked!

I like fresh, tropical scents. I love Pineapple Paradise from Yankee Candle. I have started buying the Soy Candles because they are safer for you. I use a lot of the essential oils and make my own scents. I also have a salt lamp that cleans the air and is beautiful and natural.

I love candles! Mostly vanilla scents or those that make it smell like I've been baking. We have cats and I'm always afraid that one of them is going to catch themselves on fire and burn down the house. So I don't burn them too often.

A former employer once gave me a candle sampler from Illuminations. What a great gift!

I usually just pick up the vanilla or hazelnut ones from Walmart.

Last Monday I saw a dislplay at the local grocery store. Betty Crocker (I think, one of the cake companies anyway) has put out some candles. The only one I really cared for was the lemon meringue. When I brought it home and asked DH if it was okay (he's pretty particular about candles) he took it and is burning it in his office! At least it smells good in there!

I like Partylite, because the wicks are 100% cotton and won't emit lead from their wick! My kids both have asthma, so I have to be very careful about what they're breathing. I like the pineapple and pomegranate, but I also love country apple and wild blueberry! All fruity, but not overly so!
