I very recently got a new stove (actually, all kitchen appliances) with a white glasstop and oven that can operate as either conventional or convection oven. (Twenty-one years of living with harvest gold was finally enough. They were in the condo when I bought. Appliances just didn't die.) I'm new to both glasstop and convection. Any tips or hints for using them? I'm going to use the stove top for the first time tonight -- boil water for spaghetti!

Make sure you have the right cleanser after you are done cooking. Use what the manufacter suggests so as not to scratch it. Clean when it is cool. I try to make sure I pick up my pans instead of dragging to another burner. I also make sure I wipe off the bottom of the pan in case there might be some dried detergent left on it. I have had mine about 3 months and love it. It is so nice not to have any dirty pans below the burners or to adjust temperature or time since the old one was so off. Enjoy.

I hear ya, sister! I have a lovely avocado green washer and dryer from the 70's that are still kickin' around. :o They even got loaded up and moved 13 years ago, and that didn't kill them!!!

My flat-top Amana range has held up very well for those thirteen years. I try to "treat it well" like Zooey recommends. I'll never go back to having those ugly-looking burners again.

I don't have a flat-top range but do love my convection oven. The thing to remember with it is that it cooks a little faster ( and more evenly ) than a regular oven. You may want to check anything that you bake a little sooner than usual. Some recipes will now give you the baking times for both.

Enjoy your new appliances.

I had a glass top stove for about 8 years and absouletly loved it. It did take a little bit to learn how to cook on them. I thne sold my house and moved into a rental. Yuck, I was back to coil burners. Again I had to learn how to cook on them.

My other house was finally ready to be moved into and am so excited to be back to a glass top stove.

I have a feeling you will love your new stove.

One small correction if I may....Harvest Gold appliances just don't die. I had almond appliances that lasted me 17 years only because my hubbs is a mechanical genius.

With that said....ceramic top with convection....my dream appliance. Does it have self clean as well? :signheart Enjoy your new appliances.

I have a Jennair Ceramic top and convection over.

You do need to be careful what you use to clean the stove top. I use Cerama Bryte. I also use a blade scraper for the hard to remove stuff.

The convection oven is nice. It cooks nice and even.

I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

Twenty one years ago they didn't die.

Now, unfortunately, appliences don't even survive childhood...

Enjoy your new toys!

Laura, yes, the ovenS are self-cleaning. I got a model with two ovens -- small upper which preheats faster and saves on electric and larger lower oven which can operate as both conventional and convection. I love that small upper oven.

Marian, your "agitate" signature catches my eye every time I see it. First street I lived on was "Agatite". Not a common name.

Aw Man! Now I'm really jealous! With two very hungry teens in the house, I don't know how many times I wished I had a second oven.

Enjoy your new stove!

I just bought a new house and it has the glass top stove/oven by Whilpool, so far I love it, it gets hot so fast and when you have it on med the burn turns off and on to cook at that temp (weirded me out the first time) looked in the book because I had never seen anything like that.... I also got my first side by side fridge, with Ice and water in the door now that is awesome! what a fun toy, and after having bottom of the line stuff in an apartment I am in heaven oh and I made the firt perfect cookies I have made in years in my new oven....it is a dream to bake...

I have had a glass-top stove for years, and my mother as well for years before that. We use Soft Scrub and a blade scraper to keep our stovetops looking great! It's cheaper than the "official" cleaners and works wonderfully!

Enjoy!

can you discribe the blade scraper and tell me where you got it?

You can get them anywhere: the Dollar Store, Wal-Mart, etc. It is a metal holder for a double-edge razor blade. It has a button on it that you use to side the blade in and out of its holder for safety. It works great and I use it for just about everything that is stuck on anything. Just ask for help if you can't find it in the kitchen supply section of your store.

Mary,

It sounds like you got the most incredible, beautiful, smartest stove around....the GEMINI!!! :D I don't sell them, I just LOVE them! I have bought two - my ex got the gemini, and I got the kids, so I had to buy a new one! Don't forget the toast option in the little oven - you will LOVE it! I can make a grilled cheese sandwich in there without all the fat! Remember to press the sandwich together after you take it out (the only thing the oven doesn't do!) It comes with a nice manual, and I keep it handy if I forget something. Sometimes it is hard to cope with a stove that is actually smarter than you! I use the little oven most of the time - I don't have enough patience to wait for a normal size oven to preheat anymore! I do love the lower oven though, and use it for my major cooking days, holidays, and cookie baking frenzies! Let me know if you have any other questions - you can also email me. I wonder if there is a GEMINI fan club?

OH, yes - my girlfriends husband tried to make beer on the stove. It boiled over and bad things happened - they had to get the top replaced. Don't do that.
