Well as much as we would like things to stay smooth and steady, it is just not meant to be in the big corporate world. Sigh. We have had another round of lay offs at the company I work for. Four were in the accounting department. No, I wasn't one of them. They are mostly picking those with alot of years at the company. I will say, that those that are being laid off are ones that really haven't stepped up to the plate and taken on additional responsibilities. In other words, they basically work in a cocoon and want to do everything the old way. The company is taking care of them with nice severance packages and they all have good pension plans. But it is still hard to watch these people leave.

Anyways, my new unoffical title is "floater"! That is, I am assuming more duties and going to be wearing more hats. I know I should take it as a compliment and am grateful that I'm not being laid off, but I am to work with two of the people that are being laid off. It is really hard to ask someone questions when you and they know their time is limited. I get along well with both, but one of them is very bitter and is badmouthing one of my new bosses. I am just going to keep my mouth shut and do what I can.

The next month is going to be very hard. And going into the new year will be extremely busy for me as after Dec 15th I will be on my own with the new duties, on top of my regular stuff also. Sigh...sigh...sigh... At least I will get off the week between xmas and new year's to regroup and refresh so I can go in on Jan 2nd with new energy.

I could use some encouragement ladies as I am feeling a bit stressed about everything. I don't let it show at work, but I come home and my stomach is in knots and my headaches are coming back. Not good with all the health problems I already have.

Thanks for listening.

Hey Kim,

Changes are hard. I don't handle change very well at my work and about 4 people from my office just got promoted to headquarters. While it is good, it is uncertain when one of those was my boss. While it's good that your boss gets promoted (because good things will be instore for some of us), it's nerve wrecking waiting on them to name their placement. Most of the time, we know the person, as they promote within.

But having to deal with layoffs would have to be stressful. And I'm sure that they think you can handle wearing all these different hats. And while it is a compliment, it means more changes. Hang in there and make sure to take time for yourself. And in my office, at the end of the day, it's just a bag of chips. So hugs to you! Enjoy your time off. :)

Hi Kim,

I've been in your shoes and it is very stressful. I will be praying for you. I have been with my company since 1992. Our department has been either sold or combined with three companies since I started, so I have been through many layoffs and many changes. I have seen people laid off with no notice. I've seen people leave on their own because of the stress of restructuring and all of the changes in workload and responsibilities. My only suggestion is one you seem to already have a handle on.....just keep your mouth shut and do your job. And keep reminding yourself, its only a job...its not your life and does not define who you are.

Thank you so much ladies  I really appreciate the encouragement, advice, prayers and support. It is so nice to have a place to come and talk. I know what I need to do, now I just need to convince my body to cooperate. I will take things one day at a time, hope for the best and hope that in the long run it will bring me a big fat raise. :D

I am wishing everyone a blessed Thanksgiving. I am thankful for so much and will deal with this as I have everything else in my life. With my head held high and taking each day as it comes.

Sweetie you did not cause the layoffs and you need to give yourself a break here. I know it is hard and uncomfortable right now but remember that you did not cause it. You have to make the most of the situation at hand and have faith that you will someday be rewarded. I know this from experience. Try be sure that you dont define yourself by your job. Keep it in perspective. Ohhhh... I speak from experience here... please know I know what I'm talking about here. I've "been there" and survived.

Best wishes and Happy Thanksgiving

I am feeling so overwhelmed! :bigcry: My desk is a disaster, I have paperwork everywhere. Now, I have to clean out the other woman's desk as someone else is moving in there on Tuesday. I am going to have to get this done tomorrow as next week is going to be way too busy. I should've been staying late this week, but I caught the bug that dh has and ended up at the doc's office on Tuesday. I'm feeling better, but don't want to push it. Sigh.

Today was very hard as they had cake for those that were leaving. While it was a nice gesture, it was very awkward for everyone!

It's been a tough week dealing with the woman that I am taking over for. I know it's difficult for her, but it's not my fault that she was being laid off. :( Oh well, it is over now and the real job begins. ;)

I am happy to report that thus far things are going fairly well. It's been tough and a big learning curve for me, but I am catching on and things are running more smoothly.

There is one program that I need to learn as they are wanting to make some changes and keep bugging me about how to do it and I don't have a clue! I keep putting it off, but I know that I need to just dive in and quit procrastinating about it! Oh and I now have 3 bosses! But they are all nice and respect my abilities.

Thanks again ladies for the encouragement! :D

Sounds like you are very flexible! That's a great characteristic to have in the corporate world!

Also, adding new responsibilities is adding to your base knowledge---and therefore your worth!

I'm glad things seem to be going smoothly!
