I guess I need my haircut. I've got the hair blahs. What do you do to find haircut/hair style suggestions?
Do you look through magazines? do you notice the celebrity hair cuts and ask for those? "I'd like my hair cut like Meg Ryan, please".

This is going to sound crazy, but I tell the stylist what is the shortest I am willing to go, and what is the most I am willing to do in the morning, then tell them to surprise me... I have had great luck with this... and I am usually a control freak!

Anna: I guess I'm crazy too!!! When I need a change and can't stand going from the same old do, I tell my hairstylist "I trust you, do what you want". Except for once or twice, that's when I end up with the most flattering hair cut!!!
I used to look at magazines and point the styles I like, but, lately, I can't find styles I like :hmm:
Sometimes, all I need is a change of color. For example, for most of the past year, I was a red head. People thought I was crazy: a natural blonde dying her hair red :sillycat:

Dany,
Are you liking your red hair? Have you noticed any changes in your behaviour since you went red? Since I got some red on my head that my personality has changed some too. My fuse is not extra-extra long any more... I added more people on "alert" to see if there where changes that I should report to any of my doctors... LOL! Has any one else noticed any personality changes when they changed their hair color?

Well, Anna, I don't know if my personality changes are due to the hair color, or to just liking my new, shorter hairdo and feeling more comfident.
I know that I got a lot of attention when my hair was red. It's now blonde again and, even though I feel it suits me best.. I don't get the same attention.
This kind of undoes the "Blondes have more fun" myth, doesn't it?

I think that fun people have the most fun... it doesn't matter what color your hair is!

I also ask my stylist what they recommend. I tell her how short and how much I want to mess with it. She has done great so far.

After years of taking pictures with me and asking for a particular cut, and still never getting what I wanted, I finally found someone who listened. I walked in and looked at her, and said, "I'd like my hair cut just like yours". I got an angled bob with long bangs and sides and a short cut in the back. Wash, air or blow dry, and I'm on my way. I've been very happy with it, but now I want to explore color. My natural hair is now very gray. I keep it colored. But I'm thinking of lightening it, adding highlights, or maybe the possibility of letting the gray take over. (Maybe I'll color it red ;))

Hmmm.....you'll all probably be shocked to find out that I haven't had my hair cut (or even trimmed) in 3 years. It's thick, naturally curly (but not kinky curly), and now so long that when it's dry (and thus curliest), it is past my bra line (when wet and straight from the weight of the water in it, it is to my waist). I keep the top and sides pulled back in a barrette. I've had the same hair style (just at different lengths from just above the shoulders to long enough to sit on) for 13 years now. Boy, do I need a change. My only problem is finding someone I can trust to not butcher my hair (the last time I had it cut was a nightmare as the lady had no idea how to deal with naturally curly hair). Guess I just need to get my courage up to try again....

I have straight, STRAIGHT hair... and I have long since come to terms with the fact that my hair is always gonna be straight. But you have me thinking Vicki... why is it that there is a part of us that wants the hair that we don't have? I would LOVE to have some curl! I KNOW that curls can be hard to deal with ~ especially finding someone to cut it right. But when it practically takes an act of congress (and countless products) to get AND KEEP a curl, I am sort of envious...

Anna, I guess I've had both sides of the coin. As a kid growing up, my hair was straight, not a curl in sight, yet always wishing it wasn't so straight. I let it grow out in high school (up until then my mom had always kept it cut short). When I went to have it cut a few years later, lo and behold....curls! And they've been there ever since, although there have been many times I've wished for my straight hair back. Guess we always think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence (or in this case.....the hair is nicer on the other head!).

I look thru magazines and check out the hairstyle books at my salon. Once I find something I like, I ask my stylist if she thinks it will work on me. I have had the same stylist for about 15 years so she knows my hair well. Sometimes I will just tell her to do something different! She knows me well enough that I can trust her with the different. ;)

I usually look at the hair cut magazines that are in the beauty shop...I always tend to find something that works for me...
I went and got my haircut today and feel better....

I think getting a new hair cut that really suits us makes us just feel better! I spent several years with very long hair all most to my waist. My hair is super thick and it took forever to dry even with a hair dryer. I kept it that way for quite awhile just getting little trims when I had to. But, I noticed I spent the greatest majority of the time just putting it up kind of stuck in a rut. I then lost my hairdresser as she moved to another state. I started looking for a new on and found a couple who didn't do too good of a job just trimming it. Finally found a great person who I trusted, lol. My hair is above my shoulders kind of choppy with razor cut framed to my face now. Quite a change from down to my waist!!! I just love it! After all my fear of getting it cut, I couldn't believe the difference it made. Quick & easy and just the change I needed ! I think we are all so busy at times doing for others, it's a good thing when we go for a change and treat ourselves every once in awhile.

I can now say that I am no longer addicted to getting my hair cut. I used to get it cut every 6-8 weeks, sometimes 4, but I haven't cut my hair since last October? I think? This is the longest its been in a while. I think of a hairstyle I want to try but might be afraid, and just tell my stylist. One he starts I dont have a choice, but I do ask for advice on a way to style it.

That is true, I have always wanted curly hair (until recently) just as I've always wanted to be 5'7 when I am 5'4. It's not that I don't like me the way I am, but I think it's natural to see something else and think the grass is greener....

That is sooo true: I remember spending fortunes on having my hair permed. At the same time, my sister who has naturally curly hair, was spending fortunes to have hers straigthened :hmm:

My hairdresser and I have a joke when I go to her for a change. She says, "Okay, who do you want to look like this time"...as I usually pic out a celeb hairdo. We've "done" Paula Zahn, Martina McBride, Katie Couric, and Lisa Rina in the last few years.

After using the same stylist for over 10 yrs. now I can go in and sit down and practically sleep while she does my hair. She knows me that well and I trust her completely.
Updating a style is always good though, and I do tend to change up alittle, but I have short hair so it is easy to change the look quite often if I want.

I have been seeing my hairstylist for twelve years and she knows my hair better than I do! I let her know when I am growing and I usually give her a head's up before I decide to cut it. (I hate to rush into these decisions.) When I go back in, she usually has several pictures of styles she thinks will both look attractive on me and that my hair will do. This is one of the joys of living in Small Town, USA - the personal touch. Sometimes she will suggest a slight change of hair color over a cut and that usually perks up my blahs.

You're so lucky to have straight hair! Everyone is straightening their hair at salons & buying flat irons to do it themselves at home. It's the latest craze & you're lucky to have it naturally, but I understand about everyone wanting the opposite of what they have. Curly hair types want straight hair & straight types want curls! Have you tried electric rollers on your hair? I think you would get nice loose curls?

I've had good luck with that also spasmo, telling the stylist how short and how easy and letting them do their job! You have to find someone who knows what they are doing though.
