I may be getting a promotion that I'm not sure that I really want.

It's a complicated story having to do with tenure and job slots, but it's basically like this. The head of the cataloging dept. is going on early retirement, and she asked me if I wanted the job.

At first I said no, because I really don't, want it, I may be what they call here a "square head", but I'm comfortable where I am, and didn't think I would care if they brought in someone from the outside.

But after speaking with some friends, I saw that there are very good reasons to take the job even if I don't want it, basically, NOT taking it would look bad on my record.

So my name is in that hat with the Head of the library, and we shall see what comes of it all.

Anyone been in a similar situation?

Hi Marian,

Yes, I've been there. This is the reason I left the US Air Force. I loved my job, but I moved up in rank to the point where I had to be a 'manager' instead of doing what I loved. I didnt want to just sit around doing paperwork.

So, guess what I'm doing now? Sitting around doing 'paper' work. Of course, its all on the computer now...but, same thing!

I wish you the best. I know its not a fun spot to be in.

GirlyGirl --

That is a great part of it. A friend of mine who now "cooordiates" education for autistic kids in her state really misses getting down on the floor and playing with them. Inspections when she gets to see children and interact with them is the high point of her job, and it doesnt come often enough.

Thanks for understanding,
Marian
