Self esteem vs. self confidence

My sister and I were having a discussion concerning my niece the other day and my sister asked me this.................what is the difference between self esteem and self confidence????? I truly did not know how to answer this. My DH said self esteem is pride in who you are and that self confidence is feeling confident in what you can accomplish. I agreed with him but yet my sister felt that self confidence can come off as cocky and obnoxious. I disagreed. So I am asking you ladies out there.........what is self esteem vs self confidence? Can anyone give me a good defintion so I can get my sister to understand that both of these are good things. I guess what I really want to know is do I have them, too.

To me self esteem and self confidence are both feeling good about yourself and your abilites and what you can accomplish..
I agree with your sister that they can both come off as being cocky and arrogant..Some people have so much self confidence and esteem that they can think that they cant do wrong..

Self esteem is a feeling of pride and self confidence is having no doubt in what you do or who you are. Having self esteem will help one's self confidence.

I tend to agree with your definitions too. I'd say that "self-confidence" would be trust & belief in one's own abilities or another way you could say it would be self-assured and "self-esteem " could also be seen as a belief or pride in one's self or a regard that one feels like they could accomplish something or have that ability. I think they are both good things to have as you said too!! **never thought about this one before! good question ((gemsab))!!!*
