I have always read that one way to increase your activity level was to take the stairs instead of the elevator. I work on the 5th floor of a 9 floor building and from time to time have used the stairs.
I am now committing myself to using the stairs each time I have to go down to another floor. If I only have to go up one or two floors I will also use the stairs. Eventually I hope to build up to being able to walk all the way up to my floor daily.
Ladies, let's all use the stairs and give those elevators a rest! :bliss: We'll be saving electricity also. :D
Interesting note here. As I walked out the door from the stairs on the bottom floor the other day, I saw someone I knew. He said "why did you use the stairs, are the elevators broke?" I tried to explain that I did it because I wanted to and for the exercise, but he seemed genuinely confused as to why I would choose the stairs instead of using the elevator.

Great idea, Kim. Now to find some stairs.... :D
I like to take the stairs at my new work. It's only one flight, but still...every bit helps!

I have stairs in my house, and I do not have a choice but to use them. Sometimes it can become a pain though if you forget something, but definetly a good workout.

I use the stairs as often as possible too. As you said, every bit of exercise is helpful. I've found that a few extra pounds get harder and harder to lose as I get older. They really like my middle and rear. :D

I have stairs in my house. I do get a good workout most days. It never fails that I forget something when I am going upstairs and have to go back down. And my dh always forgets his wallet or cell phone upstairs when we're heading out to do errands. Guess who ends up going upstairs to retrieve the items? :D
Our favorite phrase is "why did we buy a two story house?" My reply, "so that I could get lots of exercise." :walk:

I'm up and down our stairs constantly, too! It is good exercise.
When we are at large shopping malls, I walk up and down the escalator--I'm too impatient to stand and take a free ride!

I always take the stairs! I read somewhere that every step up adds 4 seconds to your life expectancy. When I went on a cruise with my mom a couple of years ago, I actually lost weight. We were on Deck 10 and I NEVER took the elevator. I toned up, lost weight and didnt' catch the cold that everyone else on the ship did!

Our office just relocated about a month ago to a very large building. I'm on the 4th floor. I always take the stairs, but was unfamiliar with my new surroundings and accidently took the fire evacuation stairs, set off the alarm, and evacuated over 500 people! :p Hence, I'm pretty well known around here now and I always make sure I'm using the correct flight of stairs. :queen:
Great suggestion by the way!

Speaking of stairs and escalators...I can't believe how many people just STAND with their luggage on the moving walkways at airports. Then they block the whole thing so nobody can WALK around. Why do they think they're called WALKWAYS? but I digress....
I have stairs at home and I too am up and down them many times during the day. I know it helps but I still huff and puff hiking up a steep hill. (?)
Taking the stairs, parking at the far end of the parking lot and walking briskly in to the store, stretching for items on the shelf, carrying groceries in a hand basket instead of pushing a cart (if you're not buying too much) - all these things add up to burning more calories!
 Just keep moving!
