My dear husband is very mechanical and since we just ordered a trailer for our bike, we needed a hitch put on. He decided to do it himself which requires taking bolts out of the main frame and putting a different size in to accommodate the hitch. The instructions said, "you will need an assitant" You got it.... I became the assistant  This was at least a 3 hour job ( could have been 4 but I didn't look at the clock). I was amazed at all the different tools he needed, and actually had, to do the job. I have never paid attention to his "kitchen" aka "the garage". Watching him work and get grease on his hands was  As the assistant, I actually got my hands black
So, I was just wondering?? Are any of you mechanically inclined??

Hi wingriderprincess,
What a great subject. I'm chuckling to myself with the realization that I am tending to exaggerate my skills even in my own mind as I think about what to write here. The truth is that the lines of demarcation are drawn pretty clearly in our home.
My dh has his tools and his 'jobs' and I have mine. We've been at this for a long time and I'm afraid it isn't going to change any time soon. I have never changed a tire, ever. He doesn't even like me to hang pictures. I tried to hang a small one that I received for Christmas. It was (is) up high on the wall above one end of the dining room table. "Give us this day our Daily Bread" I love it.
Well when my dh came in and saw I had hung it alone he started questioning me about if I had just put the nails in the wall or what and commented that it would be bad if it were to fall while we were eating. It was pretty much right above where he usually sits. To make a long story short, the other day while we were in the kitchen, my picture came crashing down to the floor
I couldn't believe it!! Soooooo he just calmly and quietly fixed it and put it back up. No words were necessary. How could that happen? I was so sure I had done just fine.
Oh well, the answer to this question is definitely, NO.

I have my own collection of power tools and I'm not afraid to use them! :D Whether I should attempt the things I've done is another story, but eventually my endeavors have a happy ending.

I've done things such as change the battery cables on the car, changed car batteries and a water pump. I've tackled replacing parts of underlayment on a bathroom floor and several new vinyl floor installments. I can caulk, drive nails, sink screws and build little houses for caged pets. :) I've dabbled in the wonderful world of electricity and installed such things as dimmer switches and light fixtures, and a combination switch and outlet.

My philosophy is to at least try to do something I think I can tackle. Why pay someone to do something I am pretty sure I can do myself? So far it has paid off. DH doesn't mind being my assistant. ;)

When I have time I like to watch home improvement shows, especially the ones which feature do-it-yourself projects. It's amazing what can be accomplished with a little know-how, some tools, and a lot of time.

I do all the inside painting projects here, by hand... I like swishing the brush. If hubby was in charge of painting, I am sure his plan would involve a paint bomb

I don't do any of the car fixings, but I do all the computer fixings here, so have a set of small tools for that. :)

oh yes! and i have lots of tools too. my last project as assistant was tiling the back splash in my kitchen. i was in charge of the wet saw. bf gave me measurements for the tile and i cut them. i was very lucky that i didn't mess even one of them up because we had the EXACT number of tiles for the job. i really lucked out on that one

Power tools scare the heck out of me to the point of not even being able to watch someone else use them. I saw the gal that lives behind me with the hood up to her truck and she was taking out her radiator (is that right? the thing that holds water and anti-freeze  I visited with her a minute and found out she is a union painter and works with mostly men. I would have never guessed it. She is a little tiny cutie that looks like she wouldn't have a clue!!! You gals impress me! (I said impress, not inspire :D

This made me laugh, I don't have any power tools but I'll always give them ago, much to my DH's dismay.
I am a "fixer" just can't help it, even at work I have become the un official maintenance person.
It comes from my father I think, as he is a builder from a line of builders and he got 4 daughters so he taught us how to do things or have a go at the least.
I'm not a tomboy, I love all the girl stuff too, but it sure helps being able to do things for yourself. It our house it's not wait til dad gets home it's "Mum will fix it" :D

I'm not very mechanically inclined, but over the years I've learned how to help dh when he's fixing things around the house. Guess it comes from the school of hard knocks. :marbles:

We started cleaning out our garage this weekend and it is amazing the stuff my dh has accumulated that he can't do without. Things that I haven't seen him use in 10 years. :dizzy2:

It is fun to help sometimes, and dh is amazed at things I have picked up over the years. Keep watching and helping, soon you'll be picking up the tools and fixing things.

Mechanical - uh, not really. I do own a set of screw drivers for small stuff. I also own a hammer - mainly for hanging pictures and curtain rods. I try to stay away from power tools - I like my fingers attached to my hands :D

Mechanically inclined here. :D
In my neighborhood in IL I used to be the one the neighbors called to look at their washers & dryers before they called the service guy because I had fixed my own.
Had my own tools because my hubby's were everywhere and anywhere, even he couldn't find them.
Now he will even ask me to look at some things before he takes a look at them.

I have my own tool kit...mine is very organized compared to my DH. He usually has to come to mine to find what he needs. :)
My mom, being a single parent taught her girls how to work on their own cars and do basic home repair. My dad built his own race cars so I learned a lot from him to!

Being the eldest, I was fortunate to do alot of stuff with my dad who could do anything!

Almost 2 years ago, after over 20 years working in the computer software business, I started my own business as a Handywoman. Just like a handyman, only better (I am neater and clean up before I leave :) ) I am having the time of my life and love helping people! This time of year there seems to be a big demand on closet organizers. I also build furniture.

I WISH!!! I can't seem to do anything. My problem is I always try to do something myself.. I hate asking for help!! As I get older I just have no patience and am getting used to just asking!! I need to just learn to get some basics done!

I like to think I am. :) I've changed out the headlight bulbs and tail lightbulbs in my car and even changed the tail lights from my original to custom and then back to the original ones after I got pulled over too much. :) After Mom saw me do that, she told me to not tell guys that I did them by myself. That is might scare them off. Haha!

I AM! I love working on my car, and my hands can fit in places his cant sometimes. I have to be careful I dont step on his pride. I have to let him do something and feel wanted.
