I thought of this question after playing a trivia game at my Curves this past week. What are your biggest fears or phobias? I am deathly afraid of flying(was on a plane on 9/11), not fond of bugs especially bees and wasps, have a loathing for snakes but really, really have an extreme anxiety concerning my DH dying and leaving me alone. I know most married ladies have this fear but I think mine is really overblown. How about you.............is it spiders, snakes or quakes? Oops, I almost forgot one of mine..............lightning and thunder.

My phobia is speaking in front of *omg* people, where I am the main focus.I get so nervous that my voice starts quivering and I get the shakes, I need to get over that as when I finish my class, I will have to stand up in front of them and the teacher to give a presentation on my work project(thank goodness that is not until July 2007). I am kind of :scaredcou afraid of the dark, I don't like walking into some place by myself if I can't see. Carol

I have a phobia of the dentist. I have to be put on a tranquiler and have the laughing gas for any dentist to go near me (had a horrible child dentist).
I also very phobic on expressways. They make me nervous with everyone going so fast and switching lanes without looking.

I am afriad of DOGS (have been bit or "mauled"{had one dog not bit me but jumped on my back and push me down and tear at my back} 8! times). Also very afraid of lightening and thunder....can not be outside when there is a big storm. Also cant use the phone , be near a window or have any part of my body in water during a storm...............EEKS! Gemsab, maybe you can relate??

Yes, I can Ginger! I am also with Carol on public speaking although I don't have too much of an opportunity for that now. And Michelle, the dentist scares me, too. Not the possibility of pain but the bills! :)

Snakes and roaches! Those aremy main two. I will run screaming when I see a roach and snakes make my skin crawl. Luckily we don't have many snakes around here and the roaches are minimal as we have a quarterly service. I do know when it's time for our pest control to show up as I usually will see a roach, than the next day they will call to schedule.

Emily, I'm on the same page as you, with stinging insects and snakes! *omg* I also can't get too close to the railing on a high-rise balcony, or I get a heighth phobia. If I am on the ocean, I have to be close enough to shore to be able to see the land. Needless to say, there will never be any ocean cruises in my future! :(

I have a few phobias  They include fear of bugs, especially spiders; fear of fire: I know that most people are afraid of fire, but I used to have nightmares of being in fires when I was just a little child; and my weirdest fear is... fear of talking on the phone: I'm learning and am, slowly, improving, but I've known to walk several blocks or to ride somewhere in order to avoid picking up the phone :hmm:

I'm also afraid of flying. I've always been afraid to fly, but I flew to California many years ago. That trip only served to reinforce my fears.

I'm also afraid of dogs, but I don't understand why as I've never been bitten by one.

I have a fear of drowning. I never learned how to swim, but that's because I really did nearly drown when I was 3. My father found me at the bottom of a pond. Remember the TV Series Rescue911? Whenever it showed someone being rescued underwater I couldn't watch because I found it hard to breathe.

I'm afraid of bee stings because I'm allergic to them.

Snakes. I won't go near them even in a zoo. Pictures of them, seeing them on tv - gives me the willies just thinking about it. Luckily we don't have many here. 20 years ago when we bought our house, which old and has a granite foundation, we were told to make sure to have a mason "point" the foundation. I had no idea what that meant so it was explained. There are gaps between the granite, and pointing is filling the cracks with cement. Snakes like the granite, it keeps them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It has to be a major emergency to get me in the cellar, in 20 years I can count the number of times I've gone down there on one hand.

I am claustrophobic. I have nightmares about drowning, I think it's partly the claustrophobia.

I have a phobia of bees/wasp or any other flying, stinging insect. I've never been stung before and don't want to experience that. I take off running when I see them.
I don't mind the dark, but I do check in my closets for stranger when I get really scared or when I've seen a scarey movie or something on the news. :scaredcou I have to make sure I don't watch scarey things though because I have an imagination. I can fake myself into thinking that there is someone in my apartment! lol

I am somewhat claustrophobic. I don't mind small places, just like to have a window or a way to see out. If I can't I feel closed in.

I don't really know why, but I just hate spiders. Doesn't matter if they are the big ones or little ones, same to me. I just have a fear of them. Never been bitten by one or anything, I just yell for my DH or someone else to come and get them when I see one. I'm not normaly a very timid person, but all that changes when I see a big creeping spider!

I am with Kate... I usually am afriad of myself. I can't watch scary movies, because I can't seperate Hollywood from real life. But also on my list...rodents!

I can't stand cicadas- oh golly they creep me out like no other. I had one land on me once and I thought I was going to faint. I also am really uncomfortable with eye contact, even with people I'm really close to. I'm terrified of planes- I'm going on one for the first time in March and I'm not looking forward to it. And I really hate being barefoot.

I am right there with you 2young4this...Birds!! Can't stand them!! I live on the beach so there are lots of them, so I am making some head way in over coming it. I use to have a snake and my husband had a spider so they don't really bother me...I guess it sounds wierd, but my husband is the only man over 6 foot that dosent make me nervous.

I'm afraid of flying as well. I flew for the first time when I was 38. I enjoyed it until we moved to AZ and we came thru a storm and the plane hit and air pocket and flew quite a ways down! I fly only when I don't have a choice and 9/11 didn't help my fears any! I'm also afraid of mice/rats! I have to hide my eyes when they are on the telly and that noise they make sends chills up my spine! I've had to deal with roaches since moving to southeast TX they are the largest ones I've every seen, I think they are called sand roaches! Thankfully they haven't found our house yet!

Oooooh.. I forgot about snakes! I don't go and look at them if I can help it at the zoo.. and I don't like clowns anymore since I read IT by Stephen King! I'm sure I'll think of a few more things I am afraid of if I keep reading!

I don't like snakes and I really don't like rats or mice. I saw one yesterday in a house that we were in and almost climbed over my brother in laws head trying to get away from it. And I don't care what they say, it was as big as a cat.....................

One of my biggest phobias is "Sharks" & being eaten by one! *omg* Sometimes it can ruin my vacation because I'm so paranoid while swimming in the ocean & never go more than "waste deep", but after hearing about so many shark attacks in shallow waters lately, now it's going to be "knee deep"!

Ok let's see where do I start? I have so many phobias that its hard to pin point just one or two.

I am deathly afraid of spiders. I can't even look at one on TV or in a book w/out getting flipped out. I'm also scared of snakes too, and mice (Rats). Any buzzing bug gets me running.

Have a Major phobia of being in large crowds. When I was in 9th grade I actually passed out after a pep assembly because I got trapped in the middle of eeryone trying to get out of the gym. And on top of that is my Claustrophobia.

I can sympathize w/ those who don't like scary/gory movies also. My DH has tricked me into watching a couple of them. They almost always give me nightmares, and then I can't sleep for like 2 nights.

And this one my kids got from me unfortunately. I am afraid of the dark. I know that one sounds childish, but its something I have lived w/ my whole life. I usually sleep w/ the tv on so I have a light source in my bedroom.

Do I sound like I'm afraid of everything? I sometimes feel stupid to be scared of so many things, but its just who I am.

My biggest phobia is hard to explain. I think it's about speed and being out of control. Even as a teenager the idea of being on a bicycle or skateboard or rollercoaster just made me feel sick. I don't drive because of this.

Actually, that's my personal challenge to myself for 2006. I'm going to learn how to drive. Makes me sick just to think of it but I'm going to find a way to get past that and just do it.

I absolutely hate the dentist as well. I had a really bad experience with a dentist when I was a kid (he slapped me across the face if I cried, stuff like that) and even though I know logically that today's dentistry is virtually painfree and I'm adult enough to know what is appropriate behaviour in a dentist I still don't go as often as I should and I need a LOT of gas before I can even let them x-ray me.

I never go to the dentist with my kids. I send Hubby with them. I never wanted them to pick up on my fears and fortunately they both have no problem with going. They're 16 and 11.

This reminds me... I've been putting off going (as usual) and I really should call. Been a couple of years since I was last in there.

SNAKES!!!!!!!!!! I am deathly afraid of them I have been all my life. I can't even let my sons have the plastic toy ones. I can't handle it. Fear Factor really let me see what kind of fears I have....I can honestly say I have fears...lol. Not afraid of heights or flying or anything like that. But I won't eat just anything and snakes are a big no-no

Phobias...I have a few...dozen.
(My family considers me the female version of Monk, but I will just list the ones I am aware of. LOL)

I HATE - FEAR SPIDERS! and that is putting it mildly. I had a very difficult time watching the second Harry Potter movie (H.P.& the Chamber of Secrets). Finally, one fell on me at my parents house last summer and I passed out.

I have a terrifying fear of crowds, no mall shopping for me, (especially at the holidays). I succeeded in doing all my holiday shopping over the internet this past year.

Small spaces? Outta here for me. I got stuck in an elevator with a bunch of other people once, and I was pushed up against the back of the elevator...At the very next stop I pushed my way out (and I mean pushed - like panic attack) and took the stairs up the next 5 flights. Now I limit myself to elevators with no more than 2 or 3 others or I get out.

Well, I think that is enough, I really am starting to sound like Monk!

I just don't like bugs. It is more of an annoyance than phobia though.

My phobia(s) would be Claustrophobia and tight spaces. We went to a water park two weeks ago and I went down one of those enclosed tubes and just panicked! It was awful. Never again.

I'm am extremely afraid of big dogs. I have 3 dogs under 10 pounds, but I cant handle the big ones. If they decided I was a threat, what could anyone really do?

And this may sound strange, but I'm extremely afraid of throwing up. I know...no one likes to throw up...but, it actually terrifies me. I think this one might go back to having to stay overnight in the hospital when I was 4 and it was Christmas eve. The thought I was getting pneumonia and I was throwing up constantly. Back then, they didnt let your parent stay with you and I had never been away from both parents at once.

I just stayed up all night with my husband and youngest daughter who have come down with a stomach bug. They have uncontrollable diarrhea and vomiting. Now, my oldest daughter just started vomiting. My hands are raw from washing and using the anti-bacterial gel! Help!

Kymster, I am glad to see I am not alone in my multiple phobias. I thought I sounded like I was scared of everything when I answered, but I guess it isn't as bad as I made it. I promise I'm not afraid of my own shadow....lol. :D

Phobias - where to start first of all my biggest two are a fear of driving - I get behind the wheel of a car and I panic , a major anxiety attack immediately needless to say I don't drive, don't even have a liscense , I'm a permanent passenger, second one which I'm getting alot better at is calling and talking to people I don't know over the phone like making appointments , calling any kind of business etc...
I also hate thunderstorms especially ones with real loud thunder, I think that goes back to being in kindergarten and going through a tornado while there , not being with my family. I also have the fear of losing my DH or one of my kids , I guess we can't control destiny no matter how much we would like too.

Spiders![I][U] I was bit by a brown raclus (spelled wrong I am sure) in 2 different times in the same spot, causing me coming within hours of loosing my entire arm! The Dr said if I would have waited about 6 more hours to go to the ER he might have had to amputate my arm. It was awful and I was hospitalized for 6 days! What makes it so bad is it looked like a pimple with a white head. Dr said if I had left it alone and not tried to get the white stuff out, my arm would have been worse but by me squeezing it, I was getting the infection out!

My biggest fear is of snakes,I can be in the tub and sometimes feel one is on the way to get me.They put one on the floor, at work ,play one, and I ran screaming...[never did that again] I'm PARONIOD of them...
I have a fear of drowning...
Some people scare me, till I get to know them....
Also, I don't know why, but the fear of being handcuffed to a tree and left there is a big fear lately...So, I stay home a lot.
Now, spiders, mouses, don't scare me,I don't care for them. The neighbors cats takes care of any that come around here.

Basic fears here--snakes, bugs, mice. The creepy, crawly things gross me out and send me screaming and hopping about :jump: but I can usually deal with them eventually.

I hate public speaking
I am claustraphobic and will break out in a cold sweat and hyperventilate. I am also very scared of water once it reaches over my chest. I will also begin to hyperventilate, my BP rises extremely fast and this is due to a near drowning when I was 3. Amazing how something so long ago can continue to affect us into the future. I have never learned to swim and have no interest in cruises or learning how to swim now though my husband swears he can "cure" me.
