View Full Version : Lead in Toys - RECALL

Is this the weirdest thing? More toys are on the recall list. Are our children safe at all?

Toys "R" Us recalled about 16,000 Chinese-made Elite Operations toys because of lead contamination, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Wednesday.

The military-style toys are recalled because their surface paints contain excessive levels of lead, which is toxic if ingested by young children. Under current regulations, children's products found to have more than 0.06 percent lead accessible to users are subject to a recall.

This is the second recall of lead-tainted children's products for Toys "R" Us this month. On Oct. 4, the company recalled about 15,000 Totally Me! Funky Room Decor Sets because surface paints on the back of the decorating kits' mirrors contained high levels of lead.

Thanks for the information. This just scares the living daylights out of me!

It not only impacts parents, but anyone who buys these toys as gifts.

I wonder if other common items also have lead paint on them, but because they aren't toys there's no public outcry to recall them? Just wondering.

This whole business makes me really suspicious of every toy I buy....unless it's made in the U.S., or Germany or some country where the quality standards are higher than (obviously) in China -- at least as far as the lead paint is concerned.

What an awful situation.

I agree. Its bizarre that so many of our toys are being recalled and how many of them are made overseas. Do you think the lead in the plastic is by mistake? How could those manufacturers not know to leave the lead out of the production?

Its terrible. And scary.

I just heard on the news about another toy recall. The product is called Aqua Dots and comes from China. Why am I not surprised?

The toy beads are for use in arts and crafts projects. The problem is that the beads can be, and have been, ingested by small children and the coating on the beads metabloizes into something similar to a date rape drug. It can induce unconsciousness, seizures, drowsiness, coma and death. You can read about it here:

My granddaughter is 3 years old. I think that I won't buy her any toys for Christmas this year. I'll stick to DVDs, books and/or clothes and I'll be sure not to buy anything made in China.

It's not that they don't know. That's the way they work.

They use cheap materials, not to mention cheap, sometimes penal labor, and that's why American manufacturers are outsourcing to China and firing American workers.

What is needed are laws requiring that any outsourced "American" products adhear to the same standards as the same product made in the USA!

My neighbor's kid had been bugging her for Aqua Dots for months, and she was holding off for Christmas. Yesterday she and I talked and she said that she was so grateful she waited, because (you guessed it) her child still puts stuff in his mouth all the time. Can you imagine? :(

My niece had the Aqua dots and has been playing with it the past couple of weeks. SO Scary! That thing went in the trash VERY FAST after hearing the news yesterday. Is anything safe anymore?

I just went out and googled "Aqua Dots" and now the recall notice is up there on the As Seen On TV place (where you could order them).

Our local news stations have been doing stories on area businesses who make wooden (read: SAFE) toys. Who would have thought that the answer to all of this was the old wooden block sets? ;)

If the wooden toys are made in China, be careful. Recently many of the wooden Thomas and Friends trains were recalled because of lead in the paint. The metal die cast trains were okay, but it was the wooden ones that there was a problem with.

Goodness, seems like a scary thing. Especially with christmas coming and the run on toys. I hope they get a handle on this soon.

The problem is a of that stuff is made by/for American companies that have outsourced to China to save money and increase corporate profits!

Did I hear correctly on the news just yesterday or the day before...now there's a recall on some Curious George toys? What was included in that one?
