View Full Version : CHI Ceramic Straightening Iron?
I recently purchase a CHI ceramic hair Straightener through E-Bay & noticed that it says "IN CANADA-NOT FOR HOUSEHOLD USE". I'm upset because I paid nearly $100.00 for it & now I'm scared to try & use it after reading the warning on the box. Could it simply mean that it's intended for professional use in Salons only? Anyone know what difference it would make using it at home? Could it be an electrical issue? If anyone has any info. regarding this please reply.
Mori, what type of plug does it have and is the voltage of it? Check that and then look at your hair dryer and see what it is. Also, did the ebayer say that it was for Canada or did it mention that at all?

HI Mori,
I haven't used that specific straightening iron. I do use a straightening iron, but have bought mine locally at a dept store. I would suggest that you call the manufacturer and ask specifically about home use.
Thanks for your replies. The E-bayer said nothing about this during the auction & hasn't replied to my messages. It has a IDCI polarized plug & the voltage is 120V. It clearly says on the box "In Canada-Not for household use" & I'm really disappointed over the money I spent.

If it turns out to be electrical wattage issue then get rid of it! You can purchase very good ceramic straighteners from beauty supply stores anywhere from $40-100+. But I do recommend only using the "ceramic" style.
Mori, I am confused. I did some research on the internet and found on http://www.folica.com/Sedu_Ionic_Cera_d1560.html this info:
# Safety IDCI plug to prevent electrical shocks.
Voltage: 110-120V 60Hz for (US/Canada). Click here for UK and Europe models.
I don't know why it would say not for us in Canada household. I will see what else I can find. What V is your hairdryer?
Hi Kate & thanks so much for trying to help. Now I am even more confused because the "110/120V voltage & IDCI polarized plug" on the link for the Sedu Iron you found are similar features to mine & yet mine which is a CHI says not for household use in Canada. I must sound like a parrot repeating that line! Thanks again for trying to help. :thankyou:

Mori -
Did the ebayer have that it was not for household use in his ad? You can go back and look at it to verify. You might want to let him know that you are going to send it back. Did you pay through PayPal? If so, you can be assured that you will get your money back if it happens that you need to file a complaint based on the product being misrepresented.
Sorry you are going through this. I'd be a little nervous also. Were you able to get any info from the manufacturer?
Take care,
Darlene
The E-bayer didn't mention this during the auction & hasn't responded to any of my messages. I did pay through paypal so I hope I can get my money back as you suggested. Thanks for letting me know because I am quite new to E-Bay as well. :thankyou:

I have a CHI flat iron (straightener) that I have been using for over a year. I LOVE IT! I have very thick hair and it makes my hair look like the women in magazines and on TV. So soft and smooth and silky. It does get extremely hot so be careful. My hairdresser uses it and everyone orders it after she uses it on them. I paid $160.00 so they are pricey but there is no comparison to the other brands you see in stores. Try it...you'll love it. :)
I finally got to the bottom of the problem & solved the "CHI" mystery! I asked another E-Bayer who was selling a "CHI Iron" if it was safe for use in Canada & If there was a warning on the box stating "In Canada-Not For Household Use"? This E-Bayer replied soon after saying that his Iron was safe for use in Canada & that his box also had the same warning. However, he pointed out that the voltage was CSA approved & therefore safe in Canada. He also explained that the warning on the box was for safety reasons. The CHI Iron becomes really hot & could be a danger at home, which is why it is recomended for use in Salons only... as a precaution. I was very happy to hear this news & I immediately opened my CHI & tried using it. :yahooo: I must admit I was amazed at how fast I was able to straighten my hair...5 minutes! I hope I dont have any problems with it because I've read a lot of bad reviews that it's not durable, falls apart, short circuits, not worth it's price, etc. Anyone have a bad experience with a CHI iron?

Like I stated earlier...I have a CHI iron and it works great. I have dropped it a few times and travel with it all the time. I have never have had any problems. My daughter uses it daily as well and I figure we have over 1000 uses on it and it is still like the day I bought it. Hope you have good luck with yours. Isn't it just the coolest thing???? Everyone asked me what did you do to your hair? It really is an amazing tool.
