I am buying for a 7-year-old, first grade boy this year. He's pretty bright (because he's mine, of course ;) ) and he is learning to read pretty well.

Are there any series that we should be exploring right now? I don't want to start a bunch of them -- I'd rather pick one or two.

Thanks! He is really interested in sea creatures (sharks, fish, dolphins, etc.) and dinosaurs, as most young boys seem to be.

Wish I could help, all of my sons books are put away right now. The few that are not packed are Tree House Adventures and Pony Pals, both reading level 3rd grade.

DS is now 15 and is well past these books. Yet I love books so much it is very hard to get rid of them.

I know when DS was younger the school sent home the weekly readers and scholastic book orders. This is where I found many of his books that were age appropriate.

Barnes and Noble is one of my favorite places to go for books. Their store is so easy to find age appropriate books.

Good luck in your quest of finding the right book book for him.

My niece started out reading the Dick and Jane books. They stories get a little harder to read as the books go on, but she loved them. Dr. Suess books are also great! There is also a series called the "I can Read Book Series"- Level 1. They are by Syd Hoff and have stories about Dinosaurs, Seals, Horses, Going to School, etc.

hope this helps! Good luck!

I'm uncertain as to whether you are looking for books for him to read independently or to read with him.

For reading together, my 7 year old daughter and I are REALLY enjoying the Magic Tree House series, written by Mary Pope Osborne. Each book has a different theme...the first one is dinosaurs.

If your looking for books for him to read independently, my daughters teacher gave us the best advice. She suggested that we go to the library and allow her to explore the shelves there to find books that she can read independently that she is interested in. We visit the library often, and she always finds something she enjoys and is able to read to me. :-)

Hope this helps you.

My 7-year-old boy loves anything having to do with bugs (ugh), dinosaurs, or sea creatures. It just so happens that at Barnes & Noble, there's a really cool series in their kids' section (and it's the bargain section) -- One is called Sharks, one is Bugs and one is Dinosaurs. They're too hard for the little ones to read themselves, but they love to look at pictures, compare, sizes, etc. And he can actually read many of the names on his own. he has spent hour upon hour going through these books!

He also loves the Matchbook series. They are inexpensive, and they have one-word titles like "Fire" and "Trash" -- they also include a little vehicle along with the book. :)

There is a website out there called Novelist, accessible here in PA via Power Library. You can ask your public or school librarian about it if you cannot find info in your area. If you have the title or author of a book your son enjoys, you can type the information into it and it will generate a list of other books he might like. If you cannot get to thiat site, you might want to take a look at his favorite books on Amazon.com and if you help him "rate/review" the book, you can get recommendations based on that type of book too.

My 6 year old daughter loves the tree house series as well as the little house on the prarie readers. My 9 yr old at this age also like the tree house books, but also loved the grossology series and the young nancy drews (I cannot remember the boys series that is similar). Maybe you could go to the lirbary with him and talk to the librarian about what interests him and what they have at his level. I know thats always a good starting point for us!

When my son was that age, he liked the Magic School Bus series.
