I was just looking at my front flower beds today and wondered if anyone liked to landscape like I do. It is my favorite past time and looks great when everything blooms. Any suggestions of what kind of flowers bloom longer during the season? Any ideas would be great!!!!!

I love landscaping! We have a large yard and many different garden areas. I'm not good on the names of the flowers, but know my dh is partial to day lillies. While they don't last long, if you plant alot of them they will all pop out at different times and each plant has blooms that will pop at different times. We will have day lillies popping out thru the summer. We usually buy them at the end of the season when they are on sale, they are an annual so will come back year after year.
I love roses also. As long as you prune when the blooms die, they will bloom throughout the year. At least ours have. I do live in Texas so the warm weather probably has something to do with that.
I have a brown thumb :( Anyone who wants to "landscape" my yard (and take care of it ;) ) is welcome to it.
One of the reasons I bought my current house is they did what looks like some maintenance landscaping. I'm going to miss my hyacinths and tulips that came with my last house. A couple of the tuplips were so pretty with very pointy petals and the hyacinths always remind me of the Easter flowers I gave my mother.
This year will be my first Spring/Summer here so I'm taking a wait and see what pop's up attitude and adding some color to the front with a hanging basket and flower pot on the porch.
Take care

I plant hostas, they come up every year and spread.
they are great for the Illinois summers.
I really dont like to work in the yard so I use a mulch
called Black Forrest ( I get it at Lowes) it does wonders
and helps control the weeds

I'll have to look for that mulch. There are some sticks coming out of the ground in back around the patio (I'm sure they will grow into some kind of bushes). It looks like there was some mulch around them that needs to be replenished. I'd be afraid to do that out front until I see what comes up (hopefully there are more than the "sticks" in the flower bed).
One of the houses I bought, the owner left a diagram of what she planted. I thought that was great since I closed before anything started popping up.
Take care

Hi JC! That is a great idea to keep a diagram. My husband and I are considering selling our home next year. We've put so much care into our landscape it'd be nice if someone would like it as much as we do and be able to maintain it.
My husband and I planted to hardy banana trees and a windmill palm and 2 sagal palms. It looks like everything is coming back, but I won't hold my breath! my husband also just ordered a beautiful hardy sugar cane with purple plumes on it. It should arrive at the house sometime soon. I love all my hostas and hardy hibiscus as well. Glad I found these posts, 'tis the season!

I LOVE GARDENING! but unfortunately I have to have someone do the landscaping for me.
I am in the Garden Club in my city. I love my Butterfly Garden. I live in HOT Florida and cannot handle the digging, planting, etc. that it takes to keep up a landscape.
My great gardener keeps me going. As long as she tells me where to plant what and sometimes has to plant it for me, I can then keep it up.
I lost over 1/2 half of my landscape with Hurricane Wilma in late 2005 and have just barely got it back.
Please pray that we won't have any more hurricanes that wipe out the entire earth for a very long time.

I love being out in the yard too. This time of year the weather is just perfect.. Not too hot, not too cool ;)
I have a long drive way that has several whiskey Barrel's full of flowers. They are so pretty.
As far as flowers go... Early Spring thru Late Fall I like the continuous blooms of the Patunia's, pansies, Gerainiums & Marigolds.
We have over an acre, so everything is set up on automatic sprinklers and drip. It takes me over an hour on a riding lawn mower to mow our grass every week.
Needless to say I have a nice big yard hat :p

Hi Cindy! I grew up on a 10 acre farm and it used to take us a couple days to mow the grass on a riding lawn mower and then to weed whack around the trees. I remember I used to love to do it, now ...not so much. :) Probably because I have a pushmower and not a rider!!! lol
Going to the greenhouse here in an hour or so, so I think I am going to buy some pansies. My banana trees are emerging from the ground from last year and my palm trees aare also doing well!!! They have remained outdoors all year long. Not bad for Northeast Ohio! :)

I love to be out in the yard. I don't like to mow and edge and all that, I love to plant and determine where to put things. I love to tend to the flowers.
Last year I added a drip irrigation system to a major area in the yard that wasn't getting good coverage with the rest of the sprinkler zones. It has helped sooo much in making sure enough water gets to those hard to reach flowers and has made a world of difference in their growth. I can't wait for full summer to get here to enjoy the summer flower show.

Hi Kathy! For the time being, I can't work in the yard , so I am going to work on my hanging baskets beginning on Friday.
(It is expected to rain between tomorrow and Friday.)
I bought my hanging baskets from hangingbaskets.com and they are phenomenal! Ihave to order the heavy duty hangars for them though. Last year they became so heavy, the wire on the basket began to bend!!!!
I love to plant the wave petunias, million bells, vibernum, and sweet potatoe vine in them. They look really nice. This year I may try other variations. We shall see how it all turns out byt the middle of June.
I have a sprinkle system. It consists of my husband moving it from spot to spot after a couple hours! HA HA! :)
We don't have a large yard.

Wow, I've never seen those hanging baskets like that before. Thanks for the heads up! I will have to take a look and get some of those planted!
That is a gorgeous way to display flowers. :daisy:
