My house is 43 years old. We moved in about 5 years ago. We've done a lot of work, but have not ripped into the kitchen yet. We have all new appliances. It really is quite charming the way it is. The only thing I can't live with is the counter tops. My DH agreed we should go ahead and replace the old 1960's style tile counter tops. I just need to figure out what I want.
Keep in mind that some years down the road (who knows when) we will be doing a full kitchen remodel, what would you choose for counter tops?

I have the local = of Corian in this colour.
It's called Caeserstone and is available in the USA if you want to compare prices.

Dh and I are looking at granite. I love the look and the durability. So when we remodel our kitchen, which will happen sometime in the future, we will most likely be going with granite.

My DH and I replaced our laminate counter tops about 1 year ago with 12x12 ivory marble tiles. They are beautiful but require gentle care. We kept extras in storage just incase. Granite is also a beautiful stone for counter tops. We put it in both our bathrooms. We went to this local place where they sell pieces of the granite slabs, so much cheaper! Best wishes to you!

When we do our remodel we will be using Granite. They have a new finishing process which makes the Granite stain free and mantainace free for 15 years. I wish we could just do the remodel now :( Oh well.

WHen I remodeled the kitchen about 5 years ago (or might have been 4, I can't remember now!) we went with a Corian equivalent. For me the key was maintenance and I didn't like the look of the granite grout lines. With a kitchen with countertops in interesting configuration, the grout lines would have been many.
The Corian can be rebuffed as needed to remove any scratch marks. It doesn't get etched or stained with cleaning products. I love it.

Our house is 24 years old now and needs new countertops. I would like the Corian. Now, just to convince my DH that we need to do it :D

My dad has Corian and loves it -- he also has a seamless Corian sink. :)
I have granite and love it. The countertop is probably the most "wild" thing in the house, but it's beautiful.
If you're looking for something cost-effective to last a few years, how about granite tiles? I see them being used on the low-cost remodeling TV shows. They give the effect of granite with considerably less cost. Just a thought. Otherwise, I don't know what I'd do for just a few years.

We have decided to replace the cabinet's and counter tops. It's just not cost effective to put in a new counter top for 5 years.
We are going with Granite!!! It's going to be nice.
Thanks for all the advice.
