View Full Version : Going lighter?
I keep hearing that we should go lighter with our hair color as we get older, to soften our look, but how much older do they mean? 30's, 40's, or 50's? Is there any truth to this? I've always found it strange that a lot of brunettes suddenly turn into blondes in their 50's! I have dark brown hair which I color monthly for those nasty greys, & I've tried going lighter but I find I look washed out & always go back to darker shades. I have a medium skintone & am presently using Dark Auburn from Loreal Preferance, but I'm wondering if this shade is really right for me. It's a very nice color but I think it brings out redness in my complexion & am wondering if I should change. Any suggestions? Has anyone gone lighter because of their age?

Mori,
I have over the last couple of years gone from being a redhead to a medium brown with a dash of copper with some golden hightlights. I also have pink undertones in my complexion, it has helped putting in the foils, just a sprinkle of lightness, definately lasts better and hides the greys. I still go to the salon every 5 weeks but definately maintains better even colour.
Goodluck, maybe just experiment with a few foils??

I know when my mom turned 40 she went to a new hair stylist. He took her from a shoulder length dark brown, to chin level blonde. Man when she came home our mouth dropped. Shes not almost 51 and I swear she looks younger than she did when she was 40. Hair is still short and light. I think its all up to the person. I know I have very fair skin very very fair, and I have tried going blonde and I looked like a ghost. When I get older I don't know.. maybe just have to try and see the different reactions!! Have fun!! Hair color can always be changed!!
I'd recommend visiting a salon when changing hair color like that. That way if they color it too light, they can tone it down right there. And there's nothing wrong with you going lighter. :) It's fun to change! My mom keeps going lighter, too. She claims it's cause she was blonde as a child. hmmmm ;)
You ladies got me thinking now & I think I will visit my Salon & maybe try some highlights to lighten up instead of a change in total color. :thankyou:

I am 40 and get my, what would be dark mousy, blonde hair highlighted and sometimes lowlighted. It always looks very natural. most folks do not believe I even color my hair. Years ago I tried the do it yourself and it looked bad. Perhaps I never was any good at it. But I am loyal to my sylist. She does a fantastic job and worth every penny. I don't really go any lighter according to age. I tend to go lighter in summer and a little darker in autumn/winter. You may want to consult with a good stylist/colorist. They can help you find the perfect shade.

I started bleaching (at a salon) a couple of years ago, I think I was still in my late '40s, and I love the look it gives me.

A good hair stylist should be able to help you make a decision. I have a WONDERFUL stylist. He is really good at what he does and I trust his judgement. He hasn't disappointed me yet.
I know for me anyway he told me that longer hair makes me look older than what I am so if I stay shorter then I look younger and I know several people that agree with that. But one thing I can say is that if you ever get it cut short it is hard to let it grow back out. I tried that and couldn't stand it. After about 3 months I had to go get it cut back off. lol
