View Full Version : Long hair over 40?
Do you think that long hair over 40 is aging? I've heard a lot of women saying that, but I'm so used to my long hair & I think I would feel naked without it! What is a good length for women over 40? :(

Simply said, I think whatever length you are comfortable with wearing your hair. I'm over 40 and have heard the same thing. My stylist has always told me to do what I feel good about with my hair. ;) She even told me a couple of months ago that I look younger now. Maybe it's because my hair is more up to date! ;) My hair is longer than it's been for a while and I am wearing it just below my shoulders. It has long layers in it and I can straighten it, curl it, just blow dry it, or even put it up. It's very versatile.
If you are comfortable with the length of your hair and you feel like you look good, why not?

I agree that if you are comfortable with it, then whatever length is fine. I personally feel that when I turn 40 there will be no more long hair, but then again mine is only barely shoulder length now. I used to have really long hair, but I am slowly going shorter (easing myself into it I guess,HEHE). You are the one who has to style it, so let's all just shave our heads!!! Why should men have it so easy!!!! :D

I'm 56, and my hair is shoulder length. There are no rules set in stone, so I say wear it however you wish. Heck, some people look awful in long hair whether they are young or not, and others look great with long hair no matter how old or young they are. Hey, if you look like the grandmother on the Addam's Family, I'd say that would be a definite NO! Otherwise, please yourself.....forget what anyone else thinks.

When I was younger I wore my hair very short, but now I've been trying to grow it out. My hair is about shoulder length. My goal is to have it all one length. I like the versatility of longer hair. The key is if it looks good on you. I don't think what age you are matters, it's what style is the most flattering for your facial features. If you look great in long hair and are 70 years old that is great!

I love this topic. I just recently grew my hair out again. It's been short since I had kids. For some reason I just thought that once I had kids my hair should be short.
I have had more compliments about my hair since it's grown out.
Whatever you makes you comfortable and happy.
Take care

I am 40 and wear my hair to the midlle of my back. I see my stylist regularly to keep my highlights fresh, hide the gray and dead ends trimmed. Hollywood is full of beautiful long haired women over 40. Over or under 40, long or short hair, just keep it healthy, clean and cared for and you'll look fabulous!

This post cracked me up. My mother, who use to be a hairdresser, has been on my back nonstop about my hair. I am 45 and she is aghast that my hair is shouler length and still growing. My husband loves my hair long and when we sit on the couch watching TV, he runs his fingers through it. Like I am going to give that up! If you like your hair longer, go for it!

Youre only as old as you feel! I am 37 and am not going down without a fight!! Grow your hair, dye it, wear you teen daughters clothes...whatever you wanna do, do it! You only live once!

I have also been told that when you get older, you should have shorter hair. I'm 38, pushing 39 real hard.... and my hair is just past my shoulder-blades. My man loves my long hair and so do I. I love the length of it, and I actually get quite a few compliments! I cut it very short 3 years ago because I was going for a more professional look.... ultimately, I just feel more comfortable with long hair. Do what is best for yourself.... who cares what others think?

I wore mine long for a long time and cut it short a few years ago. I'll never go back. This is so much easier and I don't have gobs of long hairs all over the car seat and everywhere. Everyone has liked it so much better short, too. Of course now I feel like I have to color more often since you can see the roots so much quicker.

I am over 40 and started growing my hair out last year. It is layered and looks OK. My husband really likes it. I think it makes me look older and I have decided to cut a few inches off. I will keep it shoulder length and layered with bangs.

I have always had long hair, to my hips, and I would feel naked it I cut it off. But I do find that I wear it up a lot more than I use to do. I really think that it depends on the style and what you think looks good.

I'm 43, and my hair is halfway down my back. I feel that since it's so long, I have more styling options than with short hair. I try to trim it every 8 weeks. Of course, when I color I have to use 2 boxes and threaten to cut it every time I color. When my 15 year old was about 6, he told me if I cut it, he would divorce me. When my daughter was growing up, she would brush it and pin it up. I feel that as long as one is comfortable with their hair, they shouldn't be worried about age and length.

I also wore my hair long for years. But, gradually, I started to get it cut. Now, it's in a shorter style. I really love the convenience and how much easier it is to take care of. I found that when my hair was down my back, I tended to just wear it up and didn't really feel like it had much style. It's also very thick, so it took forever to dry. I wouldn't go back now for anything! I say just go for what makes you happy and what fits your lifestyle!

I am 43 and my hair has always been super straight. I like my hair best when it shoulder length to three or four inches past my shoulders. I WISH it looked better longer, but even with lots of products (and in the past perms) whenever I try to wear my hair much longer than this it just looks limp and life-less. I cant STAND THAT!
I vote for wear your hair however you feel comfortable!

I feel you should wear your hair the way you feel most comfortable. I am 48 and mine is shoulder length. People think I am alot younger than I am and my hair is one of the reasons. Whether you are young or old I feel some people look better with long hair and others look better with short. I don't think age should have anything to do with it.

Honestly most women beyond their teens look older with long hair. It is just not a good look; let's face it most of us aren't Hollywood stars and even they look frumpy with long hair. My best friend is 48 and wears her hair long and it ages her terribly. Even her husband wants her to cut it but she won't because she says the" I'll feel naked thing". I think shoulder length is about as long as you can go.

There are 70+ women on kibbutzim with long grey braids way down their backs! Nobody wears braids wrapped around their heads here.
There is a prof at the medical school where I work who has a long grey braid down her back, too, and if you go to Ramla or Dimona, you can see Indian ladies of all ages with braids BELOW THEIR KNEES!!!

I am in the beauty industry and trust me... Don't cut your hair!!! If you like your long hair you should keep it until the day you die. The cosmetologists that I work with and I are so tired of hearing this lie about needing to have your hair short as you get older. That is just flat out wrong! Every woman should wear her hair the way she feels comfortable. We are not our grandmothers and not required to do as they did. Enjoy your hair and have fun with it. You are never too old to look and feel beautiful! Most importantly make sure you are comfortable with what you do and that you love it! Never settle for anything just because you think you are "supposed" to be doing something. So basically, keep it long, cut it short, there are no rules so you decide and go with it! :)

I was reading the other posts and they were absolutely right- wear your hair the way you want to. How you feel about yourself is the important thing. I think in my earlier post I was frumpy and grumpy!
Thasnks for all your replies. Well, I went for a trim today & the hairdresser refused to cut any more than was necessary! She insisted I had very nice hair & that it really suited me long...so I didn't argue! I guess my case about long hair over 40 is closed! :yahooo:
