I started reading the posts here (flag/vets) and it made me proud to be an American but also proud that I serve in the greatest Navy in the world. Yes I said the greatest Navy in the world because we are in fact the greatest Navy in the world. Do not doubt for a moment that we aren't because we are and I am extremely proud. I stand taller and straighter when I put my uniform on in the morning to go to work and downright proud that I earned the right to wear it each day.
I was asked a long time ago why I joined and the first thought that comes to my mind is that I wanted to serve my country, protect it and the citizen of this country an keep it free. It doesn't matter what I think of the government or how they run the country,I just do what I am told to do. I don't do it for them, I do it for the people who work at Safeway, the coal miners, the Harvard professor, the students, the environmentalist, the supporter and the protester. I do it for the kids you see playing on the streets.
If you have never served you have no concept of what a service member goes through. Dependents don't even know the full impact of the job. I know this to be true since I was one prior to going active duty and let me tell you, I never knew what I know now. There is a reason why a service member will automatically talk to another service member (you might have seen this at airports), we all have gone through the same thing-boot camp. We know what it entails. I am a Proud American and proud to serve. My dad and my uncle are retired Navy. My DH is Navy, my daughter is Navy and I am Navy.
I cry when I hear the National Anthem. I cry when one of my shipmates is lost or gone forever. I cry when a service member of another service is lost or gone forever.
My mom is from Italy (now a US citizen) she learned English on her own prior from Americans who she babysat for. She never spoke Italian in public, she felt it was rude. My mom became an American as soon as she set foot in this country. My great grandparents (dad's side) came from Italy and France. They too did the same thing, they became Americans. My entire family is proud to be American.
Be proud and stand up when you feel it is threatened. Each citizen if responsible for making sure we remain America! It would be a disgrace to all those who have gone before us and those who paid with their lives to give up our great country, America.
When you hear the National Anthem, stand up and put your hand over your heart (remove your hat), pay attention to it and make sure the people around you do to. Say the Pledge of Allegiance loud and proud and make sure the people around you do to.

Hi there Duchie,

I too am very choked up & inspired by your heartfelt post. While I am the daughter of an Army veteran, have a brother who served in the Navy and now have a niece serving in the Air Force, I will never truly understand what it is like to be in any of your shoes.

May God bless all those who serve & protect our country, and may God bless you for sharing your heart & inspiring us all. :usflag:

Sincerely, Trish
