Is anyone trying to learn a new skill to not get a new job but better pay or promotion at current job?
I am thinking of getting a CDL to increase my pay when able to return to work. I just am scared of failing the test..... I have the book and keep saying Im gonna study and just never do.. BECAUSE I think I will fail it... Just woundering if anyone else needing to update or add to skill level out there.
I have thought about getting a certification in Project Management. Getting this certification wouldn't get me a pay raise or promotion, but it would make me more marketable for my next assignment (or if I need to look for another job outside my current company).
I'm not worrying about failing the test, other than the cost. You can take it multiple times, but each time costs a couple hundred dollars.
My issue is getting myself to study. I'm not sure if I would have the proper motivation to study on my own and take the test in a reasonable time frame. When I went to graduate school, the fact I had class each week, assignments and tests was what kept me on track.
Do you know anyone else who is interested in getting their CDL? Maybe you could study with them and you could keep each other on track and encourage each other. If not, a friend or family member may be able to help you even if they don't know the material. You could be accountable to them to show you are making progress studying and they can also help you study by quizzing you. I helped a former roomate study for her real estate exam by flipping through her book and asking her questions.
Just think positively and go for it. If you are on medical leave, it is a good time to study. It will be much harder to do study while you are working.
Take care

JCME-- wow, the cost is an issue for you.. And yes I have the issue of motivating myself to study. But, I really like the idea of having someone quiz me. My son would probly get a kick out of it. Since, I do it to him to help him study for test. Great idea. Thanks, and hey you do the same... It should be tax deductible if nothing else..( the cost). We can use all the tax breaks we can get.LOL

Hi Ladies,
Sounds like you both have a great plan. I am thinking about going to school to get my degree (I'm a payoll admin). With my current company I am doing well but if I ever need to market myself then...
Its the idea of all the studying. I stick at it. I learn better doing the hands on.

I decided this summer to go back to college. :D I have a degree in drafting design and worked for about 15 years in the field but the office I worked at closed shop so I lost my job about 5 years ago. :( Ever since I have been up and down with trying to find work in the field I am either over qualified for the pay they want to give or under qualified for the position even with 15 years.
So I have signed up for college again only this time I am going for pharmacy tech. For the past year I have been working in the bakery at our local Walmart so going for pharmacy will be good and will allow me to transfer within my Walmart. I can't wait to get started. My first class starts on Sept 25th and will be a online math for business then the following Mon I will begin my other three classes on campus. I am so excited. :yahooo:
I say if you girls want to better yourselves then go for it. Talking about it will never get ya anywhere but doing will. You won't regret one min. of it knowing you accomplished something to better yourself. Learning is the most beneficial thing one can do for themselves I truely believe you should never stop learning no matter wat it is. If you want to get a CDL or certificate then go for girls. If you fail the first time keep trying never stop trying. It will be the best feeling you'll ever have knowing you didn't stop at nothing. :hi5:
