I was just wondering if any of you have had surgery and ended up with a chronic problem? I had my hysterectomy and they gave me the wrong blood and I had a seizure. I wound up with severe back pain and found out I have 2 ruptured discs and 2 bulging. I live everyday in pain and take prescription pain meds. I hate it! I don't want to do another surgery but I am tired of taking pills. I am only 31- I hate feeling so old. Plus I know that taking all these pills is not good for me. I don't have insurance either. Just wondering if anyone else feels like this. Thanks-

Geni - I am 32 I had my hysterectomy when I was 29. I ended up with an inguinal (groin) hernia and a ventral (incision) hernia. I went to have the hernia repaired, went through surgery again. The following year I ended up with my belly button having an abcess under it and it exploded leading to more surgery and having my belly button removed. I too have pain every day in my stomach and the hernias have grown. I now consulted with another surgeon and he says there needs to be 2 surgeries instead of 1. The first I will have in May and he will fix the groin one. In the fall I will have the hernia above my belly button fixed and at that time a plastic surgeon is going to reconstruct my stomach and give me a new belly button. It is a long road and I am weary as I am sure you are too!

I'm not sure what advice I can give you except some hugs and support! I'm not sure where you live, but there may be some medical plan that you qualify for. Also, how long ago was your surgery? If they made a mistake, then I would consult with an attorney if the statutes of limitations isn't over.

Oh my gosh... I could have written that exact post. I had my hyst in 2002 and also had complications. I also have 3 "broken" discs in my back. I am 30 and am taking pain meds every day.

I have had to minor surgeries on my back and they only made it worst. Now they are talking fusion.

I thought after the hyst I would have my life back but instead I now have another set of problems. I am still waiting to get back to "normal"

PM me if you need a shoulder to lean on, I for sure know what you are going through!!

How about posting about it on HysterSisters.com? There is a whole forum for long term complications from hysterectomy there...its the forum called: Road Less Traveled. You can find support there.

geniann- I am so sorry to hear of your complications! I too had a hysterectomy. Mine was after being diagnosed with cervical cancer. For me they had to remove so much other tissue from my pelvis and with radiation treatments, there was severe nerve damage. My bladder lost all function and I have to have a supra pubic catheter. I know this struggle does not compare to constant pain. I remember the pain after my surgery and it is unbearable. I understand your fear of more surgery but if they think they can fix it with another surgery I think it is worth a try. I also agree that if there was hospital error you might want to think of speaking to a lawyer. And also if you look, you may be able to find some financial support. I got a lot of help from a hospital social worker in that department. They have tons of recourses and good ones are very helpful!

Mine was just the opposite. I had severe pain shooting down my leg and into my foot. After an MRI the doctor sent me to a neurosurgeon for my back (ruptured disks) and a gynecologist because of tumors. I had the back surgery 1st and felt immediate relief. Three weeks later I had a full abdominal hysterectomy.

This was exactly a year ago. The pain in my back and leg came back after about 2 months. I am still happy I had the surgery on my back because the pain in no where as severe as before the operation.

I am 37 and am frustrated at the changes that have taken place in my body and my physical limitations. Sometimes at the end of the day I have a limp and I used to be an athlete.

I wish you much luck and wellness.

Sorry to hear about your health problem. I had a hysterectomy in October of 2000. I wasn't feeling great when I was released from the hospital, I had a fever and pains in my stomach. After a few days of being home I was so sick. I went back to the hospital for an ultrasound and they found a blood clot in my stomach. It was the most pain I have ever been in. I can really sympathize with your pain.

I really do feel for all of you. I had a simular experience, In July of 2002 I went in for a supposedly "routine' hysterectomy because I had a fibroid tumor. My doctor led me to believe that it was huge and that I had to hurry and make a decision. I talked to everyone I knew that had had it done and even friends that hadnt had it done but asked what did they think.
I have to admit now that I "KNEW" something was going to happen to me but I didnt listen to my inner voice. I regret it everyday of my life now. The doctor was a quack(where I live we really dont have much choice) and ended up rupturing a main vein and cutting up my bowels and bladder. I had 2 blood transfusions and ended up in a coma from respiratory failure due to pnuemonia. I dont remember anything but on my second day after the surgery my mom called me and I told her I was dying and to get me out of that hospital. She lived 4 hours away so she tried to call some of my kids and my husband(who had just been there)and finally got ahold of them. When my family(most in Phx-like my mom) got to the hospital I was already toxic. I got air-evac that day to Phx. When I woke up 4 weeks later I felt like a truck hit me. I had no clue as to what happened . Ive had 7 surgeries since and probably more to come. One lung is permanately damaged and I have gotten pnuemonia atleast 4 times a year. I really do know what you are going through!! At times I dont really ever even want to go on. I dont know why this happened to me but it did and now I have to deal with it. Pain and more pain...all I can say is if and when you need to got to a doctor, make sure he is a good one and if hes not then keep trying till you find one>> who will listen and help you with YOUR needs!! You are paying him--he is NOT paying you......49 years old and I feel like 80...

6 days after i had my hysterectomy in July 04
I developed a very high temperature started fitting with it and was diagnosed to have a poisonous abscess growing where my womb once sat
It was as big as a new born babies head about 37 cms
I was rushed to theatre again and ended up with a new incision and a drain fitted
It took a whole week for my temp to settle even though they had me on antibiotics through an iv
Now i am left with a very week bladder aggravated bowel and constant morning sickness like im pregnant 24/7

Wow!- I can't believe these stories- I am so sorry to hear how many of us are in this situation. I thought that maybe I had an isolated incident, but obviously not. Thank you all so much for the support. And thank you Kathy for the link to hystersisters- I wasn't sure if I would get alot of responses on that site, but I will definitely go there- God bless all of you-I pray that maybe by getting the word out there that impending hystersisters will get more knowledge and hopefully avoid any post op problems. Hugs to all!!! ;)

Hystersisters is a great site hun
Its helped me heaps with all my health problems :)
Even after all the problems i had after my hysterectomy i would still go through it knowing what i know now just to be rid of the pain of the fibroids and the terrible heavy periods and anaemia caused by them
I had my womb cervix my left ovary and tube and half my right ovary leaving the other half and tube in place to stop me going into full early menopause
My left ovary was found to contain cancerous cells in the middle of it but as the outer cells were clear i got away with no treatment needed :)
So thats 1 good thing to come of it
If you need the operation i'd have it done
Don't let the problems some women have had put you off
