Does anyone have an upright vacuum that they can recommend?

I am looking for one that has a Hepa filter, good suction, and easy to use.

We have a Kirby that we love. It has all the attachments and even converts to a carpet cleaner. The only thing I don't like is that it is rather heavy and is a pain to carry up and down the stairs. We bought it about 8 years ago and haven't had any problems with it.

I've heard good things about the vacs with the hepa filters. I've not used or bought one so unfortunately can't offer any first hand advice. You might want to check Consumer Reports. I remember reading some info on vaccuums a few months ago in the doc's office.

I have one that was rated #1 or 2 a few years back by Consumer Reports. It's the Kenmore Progressive with DirtDrive. It's awesome! :) I highly recommend it.

I've owned a Dyson vacuum since last summer and I really like it. It has great suction and lots of useful attachments. It's solid but not too heavy to handle and is easy to use. It has a 17 foot reach to get cobwebs from the ceiling and for vacuuming stairs and under furniture.

This vacuum has a clear canister so it's easy to see when it needs to be emptied. I'm amazed (and often appalled!) at the amount of stuff that accumulates in there!

Dyson vacuums aren't cheap, but neither was replacing the less expensive vacuums every couple of years. This thing really gets the job done!

I agree with Kyleigh. I have a Dyson and it is great.

I don't like upright vacuum cleaners. I have a Miele canister that is at least 15 years old and still in good condition. Never had a problem with it. Very good suction. The new ones have the hepa filter.

I have a dyson also and I'm very happy with it and it's amazing the amount of fine dirt it sucks out of the carpet. I'd have no qualms buying another when this one breaks down. It's about 7 yrs old now and I've had no problems.

I have to join the Dyson fans! I got one last year and it has better suction than any vacuum I've ever had. We have 3 cats and 2 teenage girls with long hair and it is amazing to see how much "stuff" is in the cannister after vacuuming the whole house just once through!
It is a bit pricey, but I agree that it has been worth every penny!

I can tell you one not to buy....it's the Dirt Devil...big red one with the Hepa Filter...my daughter has it and although it does a super job...I think the noise of it breaks the sound barriers and I'm not kidding!
I have an older Filter Queen and I love it :)

Thanks ladies,

I am definitely looking at some of these vacuums that are recommended here. I am also checking out Consumer reports ratings.

I have not had a canister in years, but I see that this is also a possibility, as it is light to push, has good ratings for allergies, and now have very good suction in the more expensive vacuums. I have a problem with neck and shoulder and I need a vacuum that has great suction, light to push and good filter. :)

I've wanted the purple Dyson for over 2 years now but my DH doesn't want to spend over $500 for a vacuum cleaner. My Mom told me about a Eureka that's supposed to be just as good at a fraction of the cost (around $140 vs. $540). It's the Eureka Boss Smart Vac Ultra 4870.

Well, after much research and trying out a couple of vacuums, we went with the #1 rated canister vacuum from Sears with the progressive drive. It was more than we usually pay for a vacuum , but they did have a sale on, and I liked the features on this one better than the Dyson and rated much higher than the Dyson, which surprised us. I wasn't sure if I would like a canister after having uprights for over 15 years, but I am getting used to the difference in them and now really do like this.

I like it because it is very light(upright version too heavy), excellent rating in suction(what a surprise this was), actually sucks good on carpet and floors, ease of use of tools(easy snap on tool for stairs, and has a true hepa filter for allergies, and absolutely no dust. I also have found that the best vacuum for allergies is one with bags and a filter, which is what this has.

I really like consumer reports for helping us pick out products. We chose our last car by reading and researching from them and have been very pleased.

Thanks for all of your suggestions and help. :)

I agree with you Kyleigh! I use to own a kirby, and it was too heavy. The Dyson is light and great!

I recently bought a Windsor from Don Aslett's Cleaning Center and I LOVE it. It is a commercial model--absolutely great suction and light weight and easy to operate, plus the attachments are so easy to use.

I'm not always the smartest shopper. Rhetorically asking -- are Oreks overpriced? :hmm: I got an Orek last year (I live near an Orek store) and I like it. Seems to do the job -- there's just me and a small bird in this one bedroom condo. It's light weight. That's what I love. Vacuuming is no longer the chore it used to be.

I loved my Oreck so much that after I paid it off I bought the carpet cleaner and the air purifier!
