View Full Version : Cats and Dogs
Do any of you have both cats and dogs as pets?
Currently I have a cat and would like to bring a dog into my home. I know people who have had both and sometimes they get along, sometimes they coexist and other times it just doesn't work out.
I think my cat's personality will allow them to coexist peacefully and depending on the dog, maybe even get along.
What I'm concerned about is how do you keep the dog away from the cat's toys. They are way too small for a dog to play with and I'm afraid they will get caught in the dogs throat or if they eat them cause an obstuction.
Does anyone have an insight on this?

No, but I sure do need the answer to this myself.
Our two lab mix dogs absolutely love to chew up the beanie babies that my upstairs cat drags around and snuggles with. I wish she had front claws and stood up to them, they would probably not have destroyed to many. As it is, if they go after them, she abandons them and when the dogs are done with them, there's just a wet sloppy mess of 'skin' left.
Any ideas would be appreciated. For the most part we/she manages to keep them away from the dogs, but every now and then she looses a baby to the dogs.

I don't know if this will help or not. My son has 3 cats and 1 dog. He keeps the majority of the cat toys on the second floor of his house and the dog toys on the first floor. Occasionally, the dog will get a hold of one of the cat toys and so far, knock on wood, it's been OK.
He had the cats before the dog. One of the cats has absolutely no problem with the dog, the other 2 cats are still skittish around the dog. The dog absolutely loves the cats and would have no problem with any of the cats. It does get interesting around his house!
Good Luck!

My previous cat didn't carry his toys around. He played with them in the living room so the idea of keeping the toys in sperate parts of the house would have worked. However, this cat, doesn't like most toys but the ones she likes she carries around. The one I'm most concerned with is her ball.
The ball she loves is the size of a racket ball but softer - not a typical cat toy. She carries it upstairs and bats it down the stairs chasing after it...unless I'm at the bottom of the stairs. Then she wants me to toss it to her. She catches it with her paws (more like a block against the step or baseboard), then bats it back down to me waiting for me to toss it to her again.
