View Full Version : What deters you from working out...even when you know you should?

I've struggled the past few weeks with getting out of the house and working out at the gym. Yes, I've had other things to do. But this is important.
I have decided I will make an appointment with myself and insist I show up.
But while I've made this decision, I'm also pondering "What is it about working-out that I so easily dismiss it?"
What about you? What allows you to miss your workout?

For me it is time. It isn't that the workout takes too long, but I have to get myself dressed properly to go to the gym, drive there, do the workout, either shower and dress there or come home and od it. Usually, this takes 2 hours out of my day at this point. I am struggling with that kind of time commitment. I was better at it when I had a friend meeting me at the gym at 5 AM. I could take the time out of that end of the day. I drive a son to school now and she belongs to a different gym. I do homework until late and night and can't afford to lose any more sleep. I think I am just going to start walking at school during my planning period. This will only require shoes and a half hour each day.

I always thought it was time, but here I am, off on disability (left knee surgery and right ankle injury),with a lot of free time, I could get in the pool (can't swim) or on an exercise bike, yet I have still avoided the gym!!!
I hate exercise , have been allergic to it all of my life (LOL). I find it boring, I think I need a varied program. I have exercised but don't stay with it, I don't feel or see the benefits soon enough. I guess I want instant gratification in this area of my life.:o

For me, it's either time: I have an early meeting planned and can't get to the gym before work and then will find all kinds of excuses not to go at noon or after work.
If it's not time, it's because I'm tired or am in pain. Neither of these excuses are very good, because exercising will actually usually help with the pain and will help me deal with the fatigue.
Finally, another "good" excuse (not!!) is the weather: when I'm biking or have planned to walk the dog, I'll use the weather as an excuse to not go. Guess my body, and my dog, haven't heard the saying "Neither rain, nor snow, now hail will deter the mail-man"!!

I find it boring, even tho I have plenty of exercise videos and a hand full of equipment,it is still boring.I love to walk but I can always find a reason for not walking..and I no quick results(guess not if I do not stick with it!!!)I am getting better tho

I need instant gratification also and exercise just doesn't give to me. I do have to get my butt off the couch and start again though. I need to lose these 40pds. If only I can get the motivation to do it.

I like to dance and I like to walk. I hate to do exercises but really need to. I'm getting pretty flabby around my middle ( old age creeping in ). So, I hope that I'll qiut being lazy and get started - tomorrow... :D

I am usually exhausted. I usually work out after class.. class ends at 7, and i am ready to go rest. I just have to push myself.
I've been tired after work, but have been pushing myself to go. I feel so much better. It helps me sleep better, too. I turn it into a competition. When I'm on the Nordic Incline (my fav) I see how many calories I can burn as compared to the last time. :D It pushes me!
So knowing I feel better, sleep better and summer is coming up, makes me want to get to the gym. I am making myself take my clothes, water, snack and iPod with me so after work I have no excuse but to go.
But sometimes being tired gets the best of me. :p
For anything that is time dependent like sports or classes at the gym, I have it as an appointment on my calendar. Although they aren't etched in stone, I try to schedule around them.
Since my evening commitments vary week to week I try and commit to myself the next day I will go to the gym based on my availability. For example...I know the next open day I can go and workout at the gym is Monday...so I've committed to go then. After that visit, I will commit myself to the next vist and so on.
Now that at an early meeting at work has been cancelled, instead of planning vist to visit, I hope to schedule days to go before work. I find if I go in the morning, there is no excuse because of other commitments.
I'd like to join "Curves" eventually, but my problem is getting there & back home. I hate taking the bus "sweaty & tired" after a workout & if hubby were to drive me, he would have to wait for me, because buy the time he goes back home it would be time to pick me up since "Curves" is only a 30 minute workout! This is my dilemma & also if I want to go in the mornings, hubby is sleeping because he works nights! I've had my drivers licence for 10 years, but haven't got the nerve to drive alone yet so I'm dependant on hubby for lifts!

Time!
I work full time, have to get the kids off to school in the mornings and don't get home until 6:30 pm as it is. Work out then???
Okay that is my "pat" answer, I know if it were important enough to me then I would find a way to make it happen. I guess thats the true reason. I havn't found that emotional hook yet to really make it matter.

Lately the only thing that has stopped me is working OT everyday. I just don't have the energy after getting off and then coming home taking care of the kids and house. I'm looking forward to Thursday when most of the OT will be over!!!

the ONLY thing that stops me from doing it,is lack of will power..i know in order to get energy, you have to creative energy, but i simply just dont have the gumption to even do it...i stay tired most of the time, and with taking care of my 7 children,i find that when i do get a free moment,i want to spend it just relaxing, not doing anything..

When I was in college, I would go dancing all weekend. That seemed to keep me in pretty good shape. 13 years later.....
I am a busy wife, mom and teacher. Between all the activities, by excuses come down to this....
Lack of time, motivation and laziness.
My preference is to walk, jog or dance and believe me, after these past holiday months, I really need to get back into it!!!

Mostly, it is laziness. I am in alot of pain right now from ovarian cysts so that has been my excuse this year.

When I have the energy the little darlings are at my feet (ages 2&1) and when they are napping during the afternoon I have no energy after chasing them around. I know I have to do it and I am determined to start Monday energy or no.
