The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency

Author: Alexander McCall Smith

Book Description:

This first novel in Alexander McCall Smith’s widely acclaimed The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series tells the story of the delightfully cunning and enormously engaging Precious Ramotswe, who is drawn to her profession to “help people with problems in their lives.” Immediately upon setting up shop in a small storefront in Gaborone, she is hired to track down a missing husband, uncover a con man, and follow a wayward daughter. But the case that tugs at her heart, and lands her in danger, is a missing eleven-year-old boy, who may have been snatched by witchdoctors.

The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency received two Booker Judges’ Special Recommendations and was voted one of the International Books of the Year and the Millennium by the Times Literary Supplement.

About the Author:

Alexander McCall Smith is a professor of medical law at Edinburgh University. He was born in what is now known as Zimbabwe and taught law at the University of Botswana. He is the author of over fifty books on a wide range of subjects, including specialist titles such as Forensic Aspects of Sleep and The Criminal Law of Botswana, children's books such as The Perfect Hamburger, and a collection of stories called Portuguese Irregular Verbs.

I love to read and have heard about this series. I think that I will have to get the first one and give it a try. Mysteries are my favorite and I prefer the ones without explicit language and violence.

Oh, I LOVE this series!! They were so much fun to read. We did the first one in my book club and then I just HAD to read the rest. I even went and read the first one of his next series about the woman in Scotland and I can't remember the title now but it looks very promising. It's hard to believe they were written by a guy. Does that sound sexist? He just wrote them from the female character's perspective so very well and I was quite impressed. You got such a good sense of Africa in this book series.

It's a light, easy read, and fun too. I loved the local color and the way the author makes you feel like you're taking a cultural tour of Botswana without the bus and too-loud/too-soft speaker system, and fellow tourists.

I really enjoyed the whole series.

I love these books!

One of the librarians here has a partner who is working in Botswanna as an agronomist, and she's been there to visit. Says they ring true.
