Hurricane season is just around the corner. Whether you live in a hurricane area or not, this is a good time to create a "Survival Preparedness Kit" for your family.

Get a plastic bin with a lid to gather your supplies. Having one container makes things easy if you have to get out of your house in a hurry. Mark the outside of the plastic container on all four sides so you can easily identify it.

This portable kit is simple enough to have on hand and small enough to be ready for your car.

Recommended Supplies to Include in a Portable Kit:

• Water, amounts for portable kits will vary. Individuals should determine what amount they are able to both store comfortably outside the home and be able to transport to other locations
• Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
• Battery-powered radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert, and extra batteries for both
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• Whistle to signal for help
• Dust mask or cotton t-shirt, to help filter the air
• Moist towelettes for sanitation
• Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
• Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
• Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
• Unique family needs, such as daily prescription medications, infant formula or diapers, and important family documents
• Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
• First Aid kit
  • Ace bandage
  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Antiseptic wash
  • Aspirin, pain relievers
  • Bandaids
  • Gauze
  • Medical tape and scissors
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Tweezers
• If you have small children, coloring books, crayons, travel sized games

While it is better to not have to use a home survival kit, having one ready for your use takes the stress off an all ready stressful event.
