I have many vases in my cupboard, most of them on the medium to large scale. They usually sit empty, taking up space waiting to be put to use. Some are crystal. Some ceramic. Some modern looking. Some antique. Each comes with a unique design.

Recently I purchased a small vase. Much smaller than any of my others. Its greenish in color, very vintage looking with a wire “frog” as a lid.

I brought it home and left it out on my kitchen countertop, walking by it daily. Yes, its cute as it can be. But yesterday it dawned on me that its function wasn’t to sit and look cute. Its function truly is to hold flowers.

I headed to my yard with some scissors. I cut some flowers from a bed and a blossom snip of crepe myrtle from a tree. Back inside I filled the vase with water, arranged the short stems in the wire lid and stood back to admire it.

Of course you can guess, the vase was adorable empty. But filled up, it is magnificent.

My lesson: A vessel is to be used and filled up. Empty or put away, it is useless.
My lesson: It isn’t the size of the demonstration but the effect. Small things do matter.

In a well-furnished kitchen there are not only crystal goblets and silver platters, but waste cans and compost buckets—some containers used to serve fine meals, others to take out the garbage. Become the kind of container God can use to present any and every kind of gift to his guests for their blessing. 2 Tim 2:30 The Message
