Changing your career is never easy but generally worth of exploration and investigation. While you may wonder if you should take the plunge, altering your life's track with the change of employment, here are some tips to choosing a field that is right for you:
Look before you leap
Investigate and research before you change fields. If you are leaving a field because it isn't a good fit for you, make sure the new field fits your skills, values, educational levels.
Select based on "fit"
Every year there is a new list of "hottest new jobs" that seem to get a lot of attention and many people head that direction for the simple reason it's "hot". Just like any other style trend, if it doesn't fit *you*, its not the job for you.
Enlarge your world
Be willing to look outside your box of experience for other jobs that may fit your education and training. Be willing to explore a job in an unrelated field if its something that is interesting to you.
Choose for yourself
Just because your friend is making oodles of money in a field and loves it, doesn't mean it will be the field for you. Besides education, training and experience, your personality may not be best fitted to the field of your friend's choice. Choose for yourself based on your needs.
Choose based on satisfaction
Don't let money be the entire deciding factor for you in choosing a new career. If you hate attending to details, a career as an accountant isn't for you! Careers that match your aptitude, skills and personality will provide a career that is more satisfying and with less stress.
Test it out
Take your new career for a test drive before you head back to school for the additional training needed. Volunteer or apply for an internship to try out the career field before you invest your time and energy. Your short stint as a volunteer could provide you with the go-ahead or may tell you its a "no-go" career for you.
Plan to be patient
Career changes don't usually occur quickly. Expect your career change to take time and energy as you prepare for the coming changes. Create a new resume. Add training for your new field. Go back to school for the additional education needed.
If changing careers is in your plans, each step you take puts you that much closer to a career that fits your background and your personal needs.
